Have AJA/Blackmagic forgotten about ABC/Disney/ESPN/FOX?

Have AJA/Blackmagic forgotten about ABC/Disney/ESPN/FOX?

It is understandable not to record 720p internally, but what about 720p over the live SDI output?

By Allan Tépper | May 02, 2014

Both AJA and Blackmagic showed cameras at NAB 2014, as I covered in other articles. All of these new cameras offer some type of SDI connector for studio use, and all can shoot the matching framerates for 720p (50p & 59.94p), but none of these cameras (even those specifically marketed for studio use) includes 720p in any of their specs. Could have AJA and Blackmagic forgotten about 39+ US networks that use 720p? Or what…?

NAB 2014 Wrap-up. Winners, Losers, Storage and Software

The single biggest thing I saw in the south hall: storage

By Scott Simmons | April 28, 2014

Once again NAB 2014 was a very busy NAB. And once again I didn’t seem to venture very far out of the post-production-centric South Hall other than to head to the North Hall for teaching at Post|Production World. There was one visit to the GoPro booth but other than that the camera and acquisition-centric Central Hall was just a tunnel to the north. In addition to the winner and losers (which I’ll cover in just a bit) there were a few interesting things I noticed down south.

We were one of the first to take a tour of this suite dedicated to Final Cut Pro X workflows. It was an impressive collection of technology that revolved around FCPX.

AJA converts PsF-to-progressive with new Hi5-Plus converter

AJA converts PsF-to-progressive with new Hi5-Plus converter

Despite popular confusion, 23.976PsF is not the same as 23.976p-over–59.94i.

By Allan Tépper | April 25, 2014

At its press conference at NAB, AJA launched its new US$395 Hi5-Plus converter which —in addition to converting from SDI to HDMI— can also convert PsF to true progressive, which I love. Frequent readers know that I am extremely intrigued by this topic. I am the same guy who —so far— has published 10 chapters in the PsF missing workflow series, and has reviewed products from Átomos, NewTek, and SoundDevices that convert PsF signals to true progressive and remove nasty pulldown on the fly. Let’s see what these devices have in common, what differs, and when each “fits” in a particular situation.

New drives solution to match your new Mac Pro are just one of the G-Tech options

I couldn’t go to NAB without stopping by G-Technology and see what’s new in their storage options. These guys will always hold a special place in my heart as there were some of the first firewire drives that I ever owned. Firewire is long in the past and Thunderbolt is their thing now. The new STUDIO SERIES was their big showcase but they had other stuff as well.
