NAB Pix: DSLR Stuff

Adam Wilt | 04/21

Loupes, lenses, and lights, oh my!

The Zeiss 15.5-45mm Lightweight Zoom… with an EF mount on a Canon 7D.

If one theme of NAB was 3D, the other was video-capable DSLRs. The danged things were everywhere; I saw more people shooting video with DSLRs (myself included) than with anything else.

There was plenty of new DSLR gear to look at, too: the usual suspects (Zacuto, Cinevate, Redrock Micro) has lots of mounting kits, rod systems, and support accessories, and they were joined by the likes of Ikan.

You’ve been curiously mum on the issue of DSLRs.  I’d love to hear your opinion of using them as professional video tools and their real capabilities.  Personally, I owned a 5dii for 6 months, but I had moiré patterns spoil enough footage I decided to sell it.  What say ye?

Whoa!  You didn’t give any details about the Sony viewfinder.  How the heck does that work with a Canon 5D Mk II?

mopixels: I’m working on a review of the 5D MkII as a video camera. Stay tuned…

Mitch Lewis: I haven’t the faintest foggiest idea of how a Sony ENG finder works on a Canon. My guess? It was a joke.

I’ve been doing some more research and found this link!

They use an older CRT based viewfinder that accepts a SD composite video signal.  The 5DM2 provides a constant output SD signal via the composite output cable (whether you’re recording or not).  So they have been re-soldering the connection on the view finder to make it plug-in to the 5DM2.

I wonder how long it will take Canon to figure out there’s a market for this.  It shouldn’t be that hard for them to build one.  smile

Well, it gives you peaking, and orientability… but I’d guess it does you no great favors in terms of battery life!

Yeah,  I think they have been powering it with a power supply right now.  I don’t think they have figured out how to tap into the 5DM2 battery yet.

I still think this is the best solution for using a 5DM2 for video.  (j/k)  see link to photo-

Those are some extremely high tech cameras.  Can’t imagine what crystal clear imaging these cameras will take, very impressive!

Jeff Foster | 01/22

By Barry Andersson and Janie L. Geyen

There’s little more popular these days than being a budding Indie filmmaker slinging a 5D MkII over your shoulder and firing off hours of footage that you can then spend months editing to make your masterpiece come alive! The biggest problem is that MOST folks entering this endeavor are totally…
