NAB2010: GoPro Goes Nuts
Bruce A Johnson | 04/12
The picture up there is the GoPro Hero: a waterproof, dustproof, armored full-HD video camera. That one is mounted on the nose of a surfboard, and let me tell you, the footage they showed of surfing, dirtbiking, auto racing, skiing and more is beautiful. And pretty effective, too -

That picture is HALF of the line of people queuing up to buy the GoPro Hero. Not long after I shot this picture, the NAB stopped the GoPro folks from selling directly to attendees, making them take orders instead. By the way, I forgot to mention - with several mounts, the camera, the case and the battery, the show special price was $200. Just add a SDHC card to record to and you are in business. You can order one online at the gopro.com website for $300. I can’t possibly list all the bells and whistles here, but trust me - this little rig is capable in all the best ways. And it sure knows how to draw a crowd!

Awesome! I bought an the GoPro and practically every accessory as soon as I saw this article! What an awesome camera for the price. Pictures and video are extraordinary for such an inexpensive camera.

The picture from this little HD camera is superb. I’ve been using one for a while. But what will really surprise you is the sound. You can mount it on bicycle handlebars, go careering down a hill, and yet hardly hear any horrible windrush. Just the sound of you and your bike. It’s fantastic.

In addition to my comments above, I recently mounted one inside a rally car, and it picked up the voices of the drive and co driver despite not being hooked into the intercom!

Too bad about the limited shooting modes, though. It’s just baffling to see the same mistakes made over and over with frame rate, resolution, and bit rate.
You can’t cut down the resolution on this cam without also cutting the data rate; apparently they don’t realize we might want to (for example) shoot 720P at the maximum bitrate of the camera. That’s not even an option.
Nor is there an option to shoot 24 or 25 FPS at full bitrate. Again, you’d get 20% less-compressed images if you don’t need 30 or 60 FPS.
They also don’t mention any continuous-recording mode, where it’ll record (for example) five-minute segments until the memory is full and then start overwriting older segments. This would be ideal for situations where you don’t know WHEN something interesting is going to happen, so you need to have the thing running all the time and then stop it after the thing happens.
