SAN MATEO, Calif. - Nov. 10, 2008 - Graphics on websites are now rivaling the game itself. To keep up with consumers’ growing demands, full-service interactive agency ROKKAN has integrated Luxology®’s modo®® into its production pipeline for creative 3D website development. ROKKAN, best known for creating content-rich 3D websites for games and products such as 2k Games’ Bioshock, Stride Gum’s Spit it Out Adventure, Nintendo’s Mystery Case Files and Dawn’s Dawn Hands Have Talent, relies on modo for its superb modeling and rendering tools, along with its seamless ability to enhance existing workflow.

“modo has quickly taken its place at the center of our production pipeline,” said Charles Bae, executive creative director at ROKKAN. “When our artists find a tool that they like as much as modo, it naturally makes its way into a variety of interactive projects. Our customers are deploying 3D more than ever, and modo’s modern approach to 3D content development is a great match for the type of innovative projects that we are known for.”

Developed for 2K Games, the Bioshock website (http://www.2kgames.com/bioshock/ps3/) is an excellent example of a content-rich website featuring a high-quality game-like experience. Visitors get a realistic taste of this Mature-rated game for the PLAYSTATION®3 as they navigate through a level and are introduced to key characters. It also boasts extensive use of in-game footage and new 3D assets modeled and rendered in modo. The site, which was awarded an “FWA of the Day” award for its rich graphics and game-like atmosphere, is internationalized and available in a wide variety of languages.

“modo has not only been useful for creating final assets, it has also been extremely vital in a project’s concept and prototyping stages,” said Matt Burniston, 3D generalist at ROKKAN. “We use modo extensively to sketch out ideas that may normally take longer to produce using conventional 2D image editing software. This is where the speed and flexibility of modo really shine. The ongoing advancement of web technologies will continue opening the door for richer 3D experiences that mirror the interactivity and engagement of console and PC gaming.”

CLERMONT-FERRAND, France - Nov. 10, 2008 - With the graphics quality of MMO games rapidly growing, developers are seeking new ways to condense content for quick downloads and better in-game experiences. In line with that trend, Allegorithmic today announced that ProFX is being integrated into the production pipeline at T3 Entertainment for next-generation game development. Best known for “Audition Online,” a hugely popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that challenges players to accumulate points by showing off their best dance moves in a cyber-disco, T3 Entertainment will use ProFX to develop a Sci-fi free-to-play MMO codenamed “Project G,” to be published by Hanbitsoft, a major Korean publisher.

“Our audience wants superb game play and outstanding graphics but they need easily downloadable files,” said Joo chul-ho, producer at T3 Entertainment. “By using the advanced texturing features of ProFX to author our upcoming titles, we will be able to provide online gamers worldwide with the high quality and fast downloads that they require.”

The non-linear authoring process behind ProFX enables game studios to produce texture assets up to two times faster than with regular techniques. ProFX procedural texture files are very small in size—typically 500 to 1,000 times smaller—making them ideal for use in MMO games, virtual communities, casual, and downloadable games.

“T3’s productions are immensely successful in South Korea,” said Dr. Sebastien Deguy, president and founder of Allegorithmic. “We’re glad to see such a company utilize ProFX for reaching an audience willing to experiment the highest quality graphics in an immersive online universe.”

STOW, OH, November 4, 2008. Audio-Technica debuts three new shotgun microphones: the BP4071, BP4071L and BP4073 Line + Gradient Condenser models. Designed for critical extended-range pickup in broadcasting, film/TV production and theater sound reinforcement applications, these high-performance mics offer extremely focused pickup throughout the entire frequency range.

Based on extensive in-the-field research and user input, the BP4071, BP4071L and BP4073 microphones are ideal for capturing high-quality audio for documentaries and feature films, wildlife recording and theater sound reinforcement. These highly directional mics offer low self-noise and improved resistance to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). Their direct-coupled, balanced output ensures a clean signal even in high-output conditions. All three mics require 48V DC phantom power, and feature a switchable 150 Hz high-pass filter and rugged housing made of lightweight structural-grade aluminum alloy.

BP4071 Line + Gradient Condenser
The 15.55"-long BP4071 has been specially created to meet the critical greater-distance pickup demands of broadcasting, film/TV sound, professional recording, wildlife recording and theatrical sound reinforcement. The BP4071 is particularly useful for miking dynamic action in film/TV audio, as well as in “spot” miking techniques in the music studio or theater. The mic provides a noise floor that is hardly measurable, much less audible. It performs consistently in distant miking applications and under the stringent demands of digital recording systems.

BP4071L Line + Gradient Condenser
At 21.22” long, the new BP4071L is among the longest shotgun microphones on the market today. Originally developed at the request of broadcast professionals, this mic boasts an extremely narrow polar pattern and excellent rejection from the sides and rear of the microphone, along with crisp, intelligible audio reproduction for long-distance pickup. Because of its extremely narrow polar pattern, the BP4071L is particularly useful when capturing a sound source from a desired direction while minimizing unwanted background noise or interference.

BP4073 Line + Gradient Condenser
The BP4073 sets standards in small size and light weight. With an overall length of a mere 9.17” and weight of only 3.5 oz, the mic adds virtually no heft to the end of a fish pole or the top of a minicam. Additionally, because the BP4073 is shorter than most typical shotgun microphones, it is particularly ideal for use in ENG and field production applications where a more compact camera may be employed.

All three of these mics offer a transformerless design for improved pickup of transients; an extended frequency response; a rugged, lightweight housing; and an integral 150 Hz high pass filter, providing easy switching from a flat frequency response to a low-end roll-off. The roll-off position reduces the pickup of low-frequency ambient noise (such as traffic, air-handling systems, etc.), room reverberation and mechanically coupled vibrations. Output is via a balanced, low impedance (low-Z) 3-pin XLRM-type connector. The microphones are also fully RoHS-compliant (free from all substances specified in the EU directive on the Reduction of Hazardous Substances). Each mic comes equipped with a professional stand clamp and windscreen, along with a protective carrying case.

The Audio-Technica BP4071, BP4071L and BP4073 Line + Gradient Condenser shotgun microphones will be available January 2009 with U.S. MSRPs as follows:

BP4071 $1,169.00
BP4071L $1,299.00
BP4073 $999.00

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 5, 2008) – Panasonic introduced the solid-state AG-HPG20 P2 Portable recorder/player with AVC-Intra recording capabilities here at the DV Expo conference. Supporting the 10-bit AVC-Intra codec as well as formats ranging from DVCPRO HD to DV, the P2 Portable will serve as a master quality deck for fast, file-based recording—bridging content to and from older tape based systems and HD-SDI infrastructures.

With 10-bit AVC-Intra compatibility, the HPG20 P2 Portable brings master-quality recording—formerly only available in higher cost, full sized decks—to the field. This extraordinary workflow tool allows users to playback and review P2 cards on its 3.5-inch LCD screen, manage clip files and metadata, record content from a wide range of cameras via its HD-SDI input, and backup data onto hard disk drives. Featuring two P2 card slots, the P2 Portable’s solid-state design holds up to the demands of field operation, yet it is small and light enough (2.5 lbs) for easy transportation.

The HPG20 supports a wide range of high definition and standard definition recording formats. Recording and playback formats include 1080/60i, 1080/50i, 720/60p, 720/50p in the AVC-Intra and DVCPRO HD 4:2:2, independent frame codecs; and 480/60i, 576/50i in DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV. The unit plays back content automatically (no need to change settings) and can operate in 50Hz or 60Hz. For added versatility, the P2 Portable supports up-, down- and cross-conversion for HD or SD transmission. Additionally, it allows “confidence playback” from P2 files stored on a hard disk drive.

A key benefit of the P2 Portable is that it can be paired with a wide range of tape-based and solid-state cameras as well as camcorders from different manufacturers. The unit’s HD/SD-SDI and IEEE 1394 input interfaces open the door for endless applications in HD or SD production. The P2 Portable can be connected to DVCPRO HD, DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV tape-based camcorders via IEEE 1394 for solid-state back-up recording in the field. It also accepts and records signals (with metadata) from any camera with an HD-SDI output, making it an essential tool for broadcast field applications such as news crew pool feeds.

The P2 Portable can playback to large HD production monitors or transfer uncompressed content to HD-SDI equipped decks, post production systems and storage networks. When connected to a laptop’s IEEE 1394 output, the portable recorder serves as a transcoder to HD-SDI-equipped monitors, for full real-time playback from the timeline. Using the HPG20’s USB slot (in Host mode), users can easily transfer content to a low-cost USB hard drive for a seamless, IT-based deliverable for clients.

The HPG20 P2 Portable features a host of time-saving P2 clip management functions. In addition to viewing recorded files in clip thumbnail view, users can copy or transfer select clips from one P2 card to another, copy selected clips from a hard disk drive onto a P2 card, shot mark specific clips, edit a clip’s metadata (support for multiple languages included), or save a text memo to individual clips when recording or previewing. P2 cards can also be “hot-swapped” for continuous recording. Additional features include an SD card slot, for loading metadata or saving user files, and helpful recording functions like a waveform/vectorscope display, loop record and auto record commands that accompany the HD-SDI signal. Internal speaker and headphone (M3 mini) jacks are also included.

When using two 64GB P2 cards (available in December) in the P2 Portable’s two card slots, the unit can record for 128 minutes in AVC-Intra 100 or DVCPRO HD, 256 minutes in AVC-Intra 50 or DVCPRO50, or 512 minutes in DVCPRO.

The AG-HPG20 P2 Portable will be available early 2009 and will offer a 5-year limited warranty program.*

Totowa, NJ (November 5, 2008) - The ever-growing selection of digital video and cinematography camera formats has made business more complex for DPs and camera operators. With the abundance of choices in cameras and lenses, cinematographers and videographers can be more experimental and creative in their work. But the range of choices and array of specifications can be overwhelming when a rental or purchase decision has to be made.

To help ease the decision-making process, Alternative Rentals of Los Angeles, CA focuses on, and specializes in digital cinema gear and in assisting professionals to select the best equipment for their projects. Offering a best in class solution, their selection of large format lenses has recently been enhanced with the addition of the new PL-mount Optimo DP (Digital Production) Rouge lenses, models DP 30-80 and the DP 16-42, from Thales Angenieux.

“We are excited about adding the Optimo DP Rouge line to our current inventory of Angenieux Optimo and other zoom lenses,” said Cory Williams, President and CEO of Alternative Rentals. “The Optimo DP Rouge lenses have been optimized for the new generation of large format digital cinematography cameras. We believe these lenses will become a staple for future PL mount digital cameras and we are pleased to be the first rental house in the industry to carry them.”

Alternative Rentals is the largest all-digital camera house in West Los Angeles and caters to the feature film, television and commercial industries by specializing in providing cine-style high definition cameras, lenses and accessories. They offer 24 hour tech support, with qualified rental agents and technicians as well as audio and post production rentals and a 4K full-sized theater where clients can view test footage or screen dailies.

According to Mr. Williams, digital cinema has always been the focus of Alternative Rentals, and in the past year the company has made a major investment in Red One cameras. To complement these PL-mount cameras, Mr. Williams noted that the Thales Angenieux lenses were chosen because of their great quality and high performance.

He said, “The Optimo DP Rouge lenses were selected for their versatility and high quality. They offer no ramping and no breathing, along with light weight and compact size. As we are a camera house that specializes in Digital Cinema, the Optimo DP Rouge Lenses will become integral to our business of supplying cinematographers with superior optics.”

Known for having the best zoom optics available, Angenieux has engineered their new Optimo DP Series to offer superior functionality and ergonomics. The Optimo DP 30-80 features a focal length of 30-80mm (2.7x zoom), a fast aperture of T:2.8, calibrated focus marks and no ramping or breathing. The PL-mount lens delivers the image coverage of full S35 (31.1mm diagonal) in a lightweight and compact design, weighing only 4.2 pounds (1.9 kg). The Optimo DP 16-42 differs only in the focal length (16-42mm / 2.6x zoom) and both lenses feature Angenieux’s unique mechanical design for precise zoom and focus.

In addition to the known quality and performance of the Angenieux lenses, Mr. Williams notes that the attractive price of the Optimo DP lenses contributed in their favor. He also liked the fact that Angenieux has offered two different lenses in the series and said, “While we expect the Optimo DP 30-80 to be the workhorse because it fits the most common usage requirements, the DP 16-42 also fills a gap and provides the DP with an additional choice or avenue for creativity.”

CHATSWORTH, CA – For home theaters and pro A/V installations where high definition TVs need to be mounted away from the HD source, the GefenTV HDMI v1.3 Repeater offers a simple extension solution. It sits between two standard HDMI cables, transmitting the full scope of the expanded HDMI v1.3 format including 1080p full HD resolutions from the source, over the cables with the Repeater to the display, resulting in a perfect signal delivery, and no delays. This inconspicuous, behind-the-scenes problem-solver measures just 2 by 2 inches for a streamlined installation.

Without the signal repeater, the high definition video and audio from Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and gaming systems cannot extend beyond 15 meters (approximately 50-feet) without suffering signal loss. The GefenTV HDMI v1.3 Repeater is recommended for both residential and commercial installations with equipment using the HDMI v1.3 format. It is effective in boosting the HDMI signal at 1080p full HD resolutions up to 30 meters (about 100-feet) making it ideal for in-room and small venue applications. Resolutions up to 1080i may be extended even further.

The GefenTV HDMI v1.3 Repeater works with all standard HDMI cables and comes with a Mono-Lok function. This guarantees that the HDMI cables are tightly secured to the Repeater’s input and output for a steady signal transmission. Cables won’t disengage from the Repeater so reliability is assured.

SECAUCUS, NJ (October 29, 2008) – Panasonic has announced the immediate availability of the new AV-HS400A multi-format HD/SD live switcher. The new HS400A offers all the powerful features of its predecessor (AV-HS400) including built-in MultiViewer image preview, full 10-bit HD processing, an expandable HD/SD architecture with 3D digital effects—and adds a host of new capabilities for improved performance and even greater ease of use. The introduction of two additional I/O option cards further expands the versatility of this powerful and cost-effective live switcher.

Among the HS400A’s enhancements are customizable MultiViewer labeling and border functions, many new keyer fuctions, expanded graphics support, and pan-tilt camera control.

The HS400A’s built-in MultiViewer, which can output four, eight, or 10 images from different sources to a single high-resolution display, now features customizable labels for each window – users can easily create custom input window names of up to 6 characters, or quickly select from a list of common names (e.g. CAM7). They also have the ability to adjust brightness or remove labels or the background “bar”. The HS400A provides control over frame border brightness as well as a green border for Preset tally (in addition to the red-border Program tallies). Window borders can now be turned off for image magnification (IMAG) or video-wall applications, and the MultiViewer’s large windows can display either Aux or Key out, in addition to Preview or Program.

New key functions added to the HS400A include 3D DVE key effects for dramatic transitions, flying key for dynamic titling effects, a full key for a virtual second picture-in-picture, and many other creative tools.

The HS400A’s many new graphics functions include the ability to import files via Ethernet interface for fast access to titles and pictures, alpha channel support, and more. The HS400A includes HS400Tool software (Windows only) to enable automatic import and sizing of imported TIFF (with Alpha Channel), PNG (with Alpha Channel), BMP, GIF and JPEG images. SD card graphic functions now include support of both JPEG and Bitmap files, and readouts for number of files and remaining card space.

Camera control functions include pan/tilt/zoom/focus operation of a single remote camera via joystick directly from the front panel, or switched operation of up to five remote cameras in conjunction with any current Panasonic AW-RP series camera controller.

Designed for studio or mobile production use, the compact HS400A is easy to use and integrate into existing HD/SD workflow. Its modular architecture comes standard with four HD/SD-SDI inputs and four HD/SD-SDI outputs (1080/59.94i, 720/59.94p, or 480/59.94i), and can be expanded to support up to eight inputs and eight outputs with seven different optional I/O boards. These optional boards enable up-conversion of SD signals to HD, downconversion of HD to SD, and scaling of DVI output to 1900x1200. The switcher maintains a built-in, switchable 10-bit frame synchronizer for each input, for glitch-free switching, even with non-synchronous sources such as Blu-Ray DVD players or remote camera feeds.

Other standard features include tally outputs for up to eight cameras, both built-in LCD and On Screen Display for viewing settings, GPI input, RS-422A remote control, and user-programmable function buttons.

The HS400A is available now at a suggested list price of $11,890.

New option cards for the HS400A include the AV-HS04M6 dual analog composite input card (ideal for use with legacy equipment) and the AV-HS04M7 dual HD/SD-SDI output card with high-quality down-conversion—for facilities requiring simultaneous HD and SD output for IMAG, recording, and Web-casting. The AV-HS04M6 is available now at a suggested list price of $1,990; the AV-HS04M7 is now available at a suggested list price of $2,190.
