Adam Wilt

Adam Wilt has been working off and on in film and video for the past thirty years, while paying the bills writing software for animation, automation, broadcast graphics, and real-time control for companies including Abekas, Pinnacle, Omneon, CBS, and ABC.

Since 1997 his website, adamwilt.com, has been a popular reference for information on the DV formats. He has reviewed cameras for DV Magazine and written its "Technical Difficulties" column, and taught classes and led panels at NAB, IBC, and DV Expo. He co-authored the book,"Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System", part of the Apple Pro Training series; he hopes you'll buy a copy, as there's still a large advance to be paid off.

HPA Technology Retreat 2009

Three solid days of “Tech Treat”.

How is the Tech Retreat like (and unlike) a location shoot? Why does New York’s Metropolitan Opera put ten minutes of solid white at the tail end of each live HD cinemacast?

Panasonic’s AG-HPX300: full-res camcorder with AVC-I under $11K

Will the HPX300 be the “it” camera for 2009?

Panasonic announced the AG-HPX300, a 1/3”, 3-MOS shoulder-mount P2 camcorder with a 17x Fujinon interchangeable lens (the Euro version will be the AG-HPX301E). In many ways, it’s a companion to the HVX200A and HPX500: six scene files, 1080i/p recording, 720p variable frame rate recording, SD recording in both DV and DVCPRO50 formats, 24p capability, and two P2 card slots, but there are three things that put the 300 in a class of its own:

  • Full-resolution, 1920x1080 sensors.
  • AVC-Intra (I-frame, 10-bit, full-raster, 4:2:2) recording.
  • MSRP of US$10,700, including EVF and 17x lens.

Let me repeat: full-res sensors and AVC-I recording for under $11K.

Upcoming: HPA Tech Retreat, and NAB

There’s still room at the Tech Retreat, and a free exhibits pass for NAB

• The HPA Technology Retreat happens February 17-20 in Palm Springs, and there’s still time to register. It ain’t cheap, but it’s probably the most information-packed and thought-provoking TV-tech conference in the world. Links below for last year’s coverage.

NAB 2009 takes place April 18-23 in Las Vegas (of course). A nice lady in their PR department stumbled across Camera Log, and decided to bestow a boon on its readers:

Free Exhibits Passport Code: TP01
This pass includes access to the exhibit floor and the opening keynote - a $150 value.  Please pass along and visit http://nabshow.com/passport to redeem!

NAB isn’t just a show; there’s a whole raft of conferences and seminars before and during the expo. Check it out; looking at the website is free, grin, even if the conferences aren’t. BTW, this can be a handy time to pick up vendor training: Apple, Adobe, and Avid are all holding classes in the “Post|Production World Conference”.

Review: Sony HDW-650F HDCAM Camcorder

The 650F is cheaper, lighter, quieter, faster, and more capable than its predecessor.

The Sony HDW-650F (US$44,950 list) is a 2/3” 3-CCD 1080i/1080p shoulder-mount HDCAM camcorder using “Power HAD FX” CCDs, a 14-bit A/D, and a newer generation of DSP for a better image than previous HDCAM camcorders have offered. Yet it costs less, weighs less, and offers more features than the 700-series HDCAMs it succeeds. While it’s primarily aimed at broadcasters, it also offers 23.98p shooting and PsF recording, so it can also serve as a digital filmmaking tool—or just add the “film look” of 24p to TV production.

Professionally designed templates for Final Cut Pro and Motion

Students, customers, and colleagues have been asking me for years to design templates for Motion and Final Cut Pro. I always resisted, because I didn’t want to do it unless I could do something that would really stand out.

Over the past several months I have been working with Ripple Training and a professional design team to do just that.
