Adam Wilt
Adam Wilt has been working off and on in film and video for the past thirty years, while paying the bills writing software for animation, automation, broadcast graphics, and real-time control for companies including Abekas, Pinnacle, Omneon, CBS, and ABC.
Since 1997 his website, adamwilt.com, has been a popular reference for information on the DV formats. He has reviewed cameras for DV Magazine and written its "Technical Difficulties" column, and taught classes and led panels at NAB, IBC, and DV Expo. He co-authored the book,"Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System", part of the Apple Pro Training series; he hopes you'll buy a copy, as there's still a large advance to be paid off.

Three top themes from NAB 2009, and other observations.
When it comes to cameras and production gear, I saw three major themes at NAB this year: 3D, storage, and digital cine accessories. I’ll discuss these, look at what the “big 3” camera suppliers had on offer, and mention other things of interest at the show.

It’s all RED’s fault: an explosion of PL mount lenses. Here’s what I found at NAB.
As soon as the RED ONE was announced, the market for PL mount lenses capable of covering a Super35mm-sized image started heating up. Aspiring R1 owner/operators hunted down almost every decent used lens available, and caused the lead times on new PL mount glass to skyrocket. At NAB ‘09 several vendors stepped forward to fill the demand, mostly at bargain prices (at least by traditional cine lens standards).

There are a million NAB parties in Vegas. This is the story of one of them.
Wednesday evening, following a two-hour Scratch demo (about which I’ll have more to say in an NAB wrap-up article), I journeyed out to the Rio Hotel for the RedUser NAB party, organized by Steve Sherrick of Obscure Knowledge. I wasn’t sure what to expect; I worried that I might be surrounded by fervent fanboys, who would rip me limb from limb when they discerned who I was (while I have sipped at the Kool-Aid™, I am not fully “of The Body”, grin).

Bugs allegedly bring transport to a halt.
I get up after a solid and refreshing four hours of sleep and set off for the Convention Center. After threading my way through the corridor of shops at the MGM Grand enroute to the monorail station (almost nowhere in this town can one gain access to the monorail without running the gauntlet of casino-based commerce), I find the access gates down, the customer service outlet closed, and a sign saying “Temporary Delay”.

More goodies from the Sunday before the show.
Both BandPro and Sony had prototypes of the new SRW-9000 HDCAM-SR camcorder to show, as well as the new PDW-F800 XDCAM HD camcorder. But first, those Zeiss Compact Primes I was rabbiting on about…

Silicon Image and P+S Technik make liars of me and Arri
Today I was honored with a pre-show tour through BandPro‘s booth, where I saw many things, most of which I can’t discuss yet (more on them later tonight). What I can share is some images of the current Silicon Imaging‘s SI-2K digital cine cameras, like the ones used on “Slumdog Millionaire”.

A couple of notes from the Director of Photography Workshop
NAB holds several pre-show conferences; I arrived midafternoon on Saturday and sat in on two presentations in the Director of Photography Workshop, one on Red, and one on the Arri D-21.
