Adam Wilt

Adam Wilt has been working off and on in film and video for the past thirty years, while paying the bills writing software for animation, automation, broadcast graphics, and real-time control for companies including Abekas, Pinnacle, Omneon, CBS, and ABC.

Since 1997 his website, adamwilt.com, has been a popular reference for information on the DV formats. He has reviewed cameras for DV Magazine and written its "Technical Difficulties" column, and taught classes and led panels at NAB, IBC, and DV Expo. He co-authored the book,"Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System", part of the Apple Pro Training series; he hopes you'll buy a copy, as there's still a large advance to be paid off.

...Winding down from NAB

Shooting ENG-style with a DSLR? Mostly harmless.

Here we are a week after NAB, and I find that I shot 177 stills and 27 minutes of video over two days on a Canon 5D MkII (it may not sound like a lot, but I grew up on pricey film, and I’m not one of those mash-the-button-down-and-hope-for-the-best photogs. Last year, I shot 237 stills over five days—and no video). Would I do it again?

NAB 2010: Final Thoughts

Another NAB has come and gone. What did the passing waves leave behind on the beach?

I only had two days at NAB this year, but I still came away with the strong impression of three major trends; call them the 3Ds…

NAB Pix: 3D Rigs

Various alternatives for getting two cameras pointed in the almost the same direction.

NAB showed that there are quite a few different ways to shoot stereo 3D. A lot of the buzz was about the Panasonic AG-3DA1 camcorder shown here, and rightly so: few other rigs come close to having anything like the usability of a standard, single-lens camcorder.

NAB Video - 3D Rigs

Looking at beamsplitter rigs, and GV’s amusing display.

A look at Grass Valley’s 3D marketing, followed by a walkaround of several two-camera beamsplitter (a.k.a. mirror) rigs.

NAB Pix: Recorders

Solid-state and rotating-disk video recorders at NAB.

I’ve mentioned the OB-1 before, but this was the first chance I had to really play with it. It’s typical of S.two’s attention to detail that the state of the OB-1—E-E passthrough, playback, or recording—is immediately apparent from the color of the backlighting used on the OB-1’s LCD display.

NAB Pix: DSLR Stuff

Loupes, lenses, and lights, oh my!

If one theme of NAB was 3D, the other was video-capable DSLRs. The danged things were everywhere; I saw more people shooting video with DSLRs (myself included) than with anything else.

There was plenty of new DSLR gear to look at, too: the usual suspects (Zacuto, Cinevate, Redrock Micro) has lots of mounting kits, rod systems, and support accessories, and they were joined by the likes of Ikan.

NAB Pix: Cameras

Just a few of the cameras shown at NAB 2010.

In between the DSLRs and the 3D rigs, there were a few “traditional” broadcast cameras (like the Ikegami V10 shown above), small-format camcorders, and digital cinema cameras to be seen. Here are some of them.
