Calibrated Codecs

Adam Wilt | 12/04

Use MXF media natively in FCP and on Windows; use FCP media on Windows and non-FCP Macs.

Need to use MXF media (P2 DVCPRO/50/HD and AVC-I, IMX, XDCAM) natively in Final Cut Pro, or in Windows NLEs? Need to play FCP-captured or FCP-generated Quicktimes with HDV, DVCPRO50/HD, or XDCAM/HD/EX content on Windows machines, or on Macs without Final Cut Studio? Check out http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/welcome.html.

Importers and codecs available singly or in bundles, from $60 - $110 (with free, watermarked demo versions so you can see if they solve your problems before you spend your hard-earned). I haven’t tried ‘em myself but thought I’d pass on the info, because if this is the sort of thing you need, you really need it.

(With a tip of the hat to Rich Young on the SF Cutters FCPUG mailing list for pointing these out!)

Thanks, Adam!

I tried it out with some AVC-I footage, and it worked fine.  I could import the MXF’s from the Video Folder inside the P2 Contents folder.  They played out in the Preview window, but had to be rendered when brought on the timeline, which isn’t helpful.  Anyone have a suggestion for a timeline setting that might help this?  I think I was using Apple ProRes HQ in 1280x720 (shot with an HPX2000).

I also gave it a try at the school I teach at and it works as advertised.

I tried it on several of our PCs with footage shot on JVC cameras with the Focus Enhancement drives. They files work great on a Mac, but not at all on PCs. Installed the demo and loaded the files directly onto AE without a hitch.

Just to make sure people understand, this software only allows you to IMPORT files. When you want to export, you have to choose another codec.
