PMW-EX1 Update 2

Adam Wilt | 02/27

Corrections and details

• Adam Van Voorhis of Boston Camera says that the EX1 does indeed supply Y/C video, using the same VMC-15FS cable that works on the HVR-V1.
• Reader Mark Weiss ran a formal audio analysis for line-level inputs, with interesting results.

My EX1 review has been updated with these tidbits.

Question: On the mighty DVInfo.com, there’s been a debate if the EX1 is indeed 10-bit out (live from HD-SDI). Can anyone verify this with a still .PNG file for download?

Is it 10-bit? If it is, it’ll be the first in it’s class - a new class of it’s own that it’s created.

It is 10-bit, and the live signal uses all 10 bits. I verified this tonight with uncompressed 10-bit and ProRes422 HD captured on a Kona 2 card, FCP 6.0.2, and examined in Shake 4.1 (which lets me look at pixel values directly).

NAB 2012:  Sony Press Conference

Bruce A Johnson | 04/15

Memories of things past…....

The annual Sony NAB press conference was held at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel, with a setting that seemed to be a bit less grandiose than previous years.  Perhaps this is fitting considering that Sony recently announced as many as 10,000 layoffs coming in the near future.  But even without that hanging over the festivities, the announcements made by Senior Vice President for Broadcast & Production Systems Alec Shapiro…
