A Day In The Life: Madison WI, 2/18/11
Bruce A Johnson | 02/18
Not Your Normal Day
If you have been paying attention to the news at all, you might have noticed that some news is breaking out in our little burg. I’m not going to recap what it is all about, but this story is about how life can change in a hell of a hurry when the world shifts around you.
Actually, the story of Friday starts on Thursday, February 17, at about 8:30PM. I was doing one of my main jobs at Wisconsin Public Television, directing television coverage of a campus lecture on vivisection (a pretty grisly subject, truth be told.)

(Aside: I was using the Sony Anycast.) About halfway through the presentation, my cell phone started vibrating - my wife was calling. I figured I could ignore that until the gig was over.
Ten minutes later she called again. With visions of family disaster racing through my head, I answered it, whispering as I continued to direct. “A guy from CBS called,” she said. “I texted you the number.” Really? CBS called ME?
“We need a shooter and audio guy for a live shot for The Early Show in the Governor’s office.” That’s cool, I’ve shot in there many times. “Call time is 4:15 AM.” Ewwwwwww. Not a morning person, especially when I knew I wouldn’t be home Thursday night before 10PM at least. After a bit of wrangling over who would be bringing the camera, lighting and such, I packed up Thursday evening’s job, took the gear back to WPT, drove home and virtually leapt into bed at 1030P. For a guy that doesn’t usually go to bed until after midnight, falling asleep that early isn’t easy. And it’s hard to stay asleep when you forget to turn off the ringer on your cellphone, which BONGED loudly about 1230A. So I slept little.

I had to do something similar 2 weeks ago. Shoot a flower auction here in Holland at 5 in the morning.
I’m also a night person and I couldn’t sleep before midnight (stayed in a hotel beside the place, so I wouldn’t have to travel far in the morning).
It was painful to wake up and work but it feels great to be finished with work at 9 in the morning!

Great writeup, Bruce!
I, also a night person, have to be up at 5am tomorrow to shoot the craning of our studio A/C onto the roof. Supposed to be the coldest morning of the year (yeah, 33 degrees F ain’t that bad, but living in CA lo these many years, I don’t have proper winter togs any more). Sure hope the Nikon timelapse camera doesn’t chill out terminally while I run around doing pickups with a GH1 (lo, how the mighty have fallen, grin).
