Hey Editors!  Did You Know You Are Making Six Figures?

Bruce A Johnson | 06/02

Seriously!

This article from Forbes offers up the surprising (to me, at least) fact that film and video editors are part of that rare strata of American workers that makes….

....drum roll, please…

...a SIX-FIGURE salary!  Really! Over a hundred grand a year!

Of course, it also claims that there are only about 18,000 of us in the USA.  I gotta tell ya, if the salaries of all my editing buddies are any indication, there are two or three editors out there making over a BILLION dollars a year, and in doing so “destroy the curve” for the rest of us.

Six figures!  Yeah, right.  Are you making six figures?  Tell me about it.

It says the average earns $62,500. I edit in the Dallas-Forth area and that sound about right…especially for corporate staff editors. I’m sure high-end post houses pay more.

If you are a good freelance editor and stay busy, busting 100k should be no problem. The average rate is $50-$65 per hour here in Dallas. You can do the math.

Um, Bruce…to be fair, that’s a pretty selective reading of the article. As noted in the other comment, the average is 62,500; not 100k. The top 10% made 112k on up.

And I dare say (based on my skewed experience of working in LA for many years) that I believe that number - at least, for a freelance editor, or one running his own business (not one on staff at a station, in a corporate situation, etc.). You need to make a lot just to keep up in gear.

I do remember hearing years ago that many were lamenting how schools and workshops were kicking out too many Avid editors, bringing the intro rate down to around $35/hour. But I saw the same thing happen in motion graphics: around 2000, people started getting into it just for the money, not for the love. Then the tech crash happened. Then 9/11 happened. For better or worse, thinned out all of the money chasers right away.

Yep, a selective reading of an article entitled:

“America’s Most Surprising Six-Figure Jobs”

Sure I was a bit hyperbolic, but really!  Yeah, I’m in the Midwest, where $100K is ridiculous money (except maybe in Chicago,) but on the whole saying a job pays $100K when that’s just the top 10% seems a tad disingenuous on Forbes’ part.  And do you really think there are only 18,000 of us?

I guess what I was getting at was the total ridiculousness of the article.

Congratulations on having one of the most sophisticated blogs Ive come across in some time! Its just incredible how much you can take away from something simply because of how visually beautiful it is. Youve put together a great blog space—great graphics, videos, layout. This is definitely a must-see blog!
