How Do You Watch Your TV?
Plasma? LCD? RPTV? Tube?
An interesting article from TVTechnology.com shows that in the US, LCD flat-screens are selling at a rate that buries the competition by an eight-to-one ratio.
But the really interesting info is near the end of the article, which notes that worldwide, the top-selling display technology is…
...wait for it…
...cathode-ray tube! OK, not in the US, and not even by much worldwide, but still that’s amazing. I was in a Best Buy over the weekend and counted exactly one CRT among the store’s 50 or so sets on display. And there weren’t all that many plasma sets either, which if you are into saving electricity like I am can only be seen as a good thing. (Fun Christmas party trick: Play a Yule Log DVD on a plasma screen, then hold your hands over the vents on top. Not only will it look like a fireplace, it will give off almost as much heat.)
I always figured the DTV transition would really be over when all the CRT assembly lines would be shut down. Guess I have to re-calibrate my expectations a bit.
And in other news, is 1080p good enough for you? Apparently not for Samsung, who demonstrated a 3840×2160 - or in short, 2160p - display this week. Jeez, can’t we just take a deep breath here for a minute? Lots of people haven’t paid off their current HDTVs yet!

So I guess “Quad HD” will be the new label of choice for ~4k displays…

Hey Bruce!
I just discovered your blog today after a couple searches to see if you were on Flickr (I still don’t know if you are or not, by the way). I wanted to let you know that I uploaded eight years of Iowa DTV Symposium Photos to our (IPTV) Flickr account today and created a DTV Symposium group. I remember seeing a couple photos of you!

In response to your blog post… I finally bought a HDTV a couple months ago. I got the Sharp Aquos 46” 1080p LCD (LC-46D62U)… and, like I mentioned to you, the reason I finally bought one is so I could enjoy podcasts using an AppleTV. Many of my podcasts are in HD which is nice. Movie rentals on AppleTV just work awesome too!
I know you think I am an Apple fan boy, but I still don’t have an iPhone. I think I am about to drink the coolaid though, since my current MotoQ contract expires on July 11th (the same day iPhone 2.0 comes out).
Anyway, I hope all is well with you, and enjoy the photos. Hope you join the group too if you are on Flickr.
L8R,
Danny
