Isn’t Photography A First Amendment Right?

Disturbing Video From Denver

Fellow PVC’er Jim Feeley sent me this link.  Check out this clip from Denver near the Democratic National Convention.  Watch a really big cop nail a really small woman with a long rod and knock her to the ground.  And for doing basically… nothing.

There are other clips of similar stories at http://carlosmiller.com/ .  As a photographer that occasionally has to work around “citizen journalists,” I feel strongly both ways on this subject, but this footage chills me to the bone.  The other clip on the Carlos Miller site is from “Democracy Now!”, and while I applaud their intent generally, there is something about their packaging and delivery of the news that immediately makes me skeptical.  Still, for the most part the pictures don’t lie.  Phalanxes of police officers made up like ninjas with no visible identification pushing protesters around is not an image that screams “healthy democracy!” to me.

What do you think?
