Live From NAB: The Xtender!
Bruce A Johnson | 04/20
I TOLD you to get that sungun off that camera!
Here’s a hint: NAB 2009 is The Year Of The LED Light. There are over a dozen different manufacturers here (and in the next few days I’ll tell you a bit about a whole bunch of them.) But the problem with almost all of them is that they either screw to the top of your camera or slide into the shoe - and both of those places are dead-center on the axis of the lens. This produces ugly, flat, boring lighting. What you really want is to be able to get the light up and off to the side of the camera - and former news shooter Shawn Dennison has made it happen.
His product is called The Xtender, and it is magic. Three joints on two lightweight-yet-sturdy arms make it possible to get that light around a foot in the air, or off to the right or left, or some combination of the two. It’s a simple idea, elegantly executed, and reasonably priced to boot. His website is www.xtender.tv - I recommend you give it a look!

“THE” piece of gear you should “never” be without! I’m a former photojournalist turned news director turned television/film director and have to say that Sean’s Xtender is amazing! I just Directed a major show for MTV and told my DP about Sean’s Xtender. I practically demanded that we buy them for the run of the show. They arrive and within minutes all the operators were raving about them. There’s a couple of great things about the arm that I love as a director and former photojournalist… options! Options galore! Not just for lighting but also for monitors when using a Red Cam or Cinealta/Varicam’s. Love that you can finally get rid of that “wedding light” mentality to run and gun as well as set up shooting. The only light arm that has been available has been the Israeli Arm. Unfortunately, it’s not anywhere near as user friendly as the Xtender Arm. I’ve directed Breaking Bonaduce (1&2;), The Two Corey’s, I want to work for Diddy, Kitchen Nightmares (currently), Jesse’s Story (Feature Documentary) and wish I would have had the Xtender on every one of these shoots!!!
All the best and have fun!
