So You Think You Have An Original Idea?

Everything is a Remix Part 2 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo.

Big thanks to Gary Bettan of Videoguys.com for pointing out a really interesting take on modern creativity.  It’s at a site called EverythingisaRemix.info .  A guy named Kirby Ferguson just disassembles two of the most sacred cows of the last forty years - Led Zeppelin and Star Wars - in a funny, deadpan way that makes “This American Life” sound like “Family Guy.”  And they aren’t the only victims here - be sure to hang on through the credits for even more fun!  There are currently two episodes out (of a promised four).  Even though there are embed links in this post, be sure to go to his site and click on the “Donate” button.  This guy deserves a little dough!

LED Light Tests: Flesh Tone and Color Comparison Shootout

Art Adams | 04/09

There’s one color that will always bother us if it’s wrong: flesh tone. We tested ten common LED lights against a tungsten Inkie and a Kino Flo… come see the results!

Color comparison tests are hard. Color science is witchcraft, and objective color is exceedingly difficult to quantify. Comparison is really the only way to judge color, so we tested ten LED lights against two tungsten Tweenies and a 3200K 2’x4…

LED Light Tests: PRG Sponsors an LED Light Shootout

Art Adams | 04/02

A dozen lights, an Arri Alexa, an intrepid crew… what could go wrong? Lots, which is why we had to work extra hard. Tests are never easy, and comparison tests are among the hardest of all.

“LED Light Shootout” sounds so dramatic, as if a collection of motley illuminants met in a dusty western town to settle their differences with bullets instead of marketing. It’s actually tedious, mind numbing work… and a real…

I’m guessing he’s claiming “fair use” for all those copyrighted images and music.

It’s a pretty textbook example of fair use, and he’s posted on Vimeo which tends to respect that sort of thing, rather than Youtube which takes down anything in response to a DMCA request. Led Zepp and Star Wars are fairly easy targets, given the LZ were (as the video points out) notorious plagiarists.

The issue I’d have is that in order to make his point he mixes up the word remix with sampling. You don’t remix a chic song by using the bassline in a different composition, you remix the new song by adding a sampled bassline to it. Remixing is the remodifying of your own song (or that song on someone else’s behalf. Therefore a cover, or a rip off is a fundamentally different to a remix.

If you simply expand the definition so that remix can means covers and rip-offs, surely the term becomes meaningless. All he’s really done is taken a fundamental and long standing principle of culture, in fact almost it’s defining characteristic, that we all share and reproduce knowledge in its various forms, and labelled that “remixing”.

Pulse Width Modulation is NOT Your Friend

Art Adams | 12/15

What you don’t know about PWM may ruin your next shot—particularly if you’re using a camera with a rolling shutter!

Here’s the deal: there’s this thing called “pulse width modulation,” and under certain conditions it doesn’t play well with rolling shutter cameras. Most of the time it’s no problem, but we don’t get phone calls from…
