Sony EX1 Alternative Recording Media UPDATE!

Bruce A Johnson | 01/02

Now You Can Close The Door!

image

If you have been following the saga of alternative recording media for the Sony EX1 and EX3 XDCam EX cameras, you’ll recall that the main problem with using the Kensington ExpressCard 34 adapter is that when loaded into the EX1, the media door can not close.  (The EX3 has no door problem with the Kensington card.)  Well, the good Aussies at E-Films have grabbed the EX1 bull by the horns, so to speak. They designed a ExpressCard34 adapter that is low-profile enough that it fits comfortably behind the media door on the EX1, so dust and other contamination should not be an issue.  It also has one other big advantage over the Kensington adapter - it’s actually available!  Order it here and save yourself from ridiculously expensive Sony SxS media.  I’m really impressed with the initiative show by the E-Films folks.  Good on ya!

Big thanks to Jim Feeley for the link to the ordering page!

I am about to receive my new EX3 in a few days, and I definitely want to use alternative recording options with it to avoid being forced to buy the ridiculously priced SxS media.

You might know the website http://www.xdcamexinfo.com/sdassxs/ which deals with all the different flavors of alternative recording media for the XDCAM-EX camera series.

As mentioned in your article, due to the unavailability of the Kensington ExpressCard 34 adapter and likewise, one Aussie (Ross) has started selling his home-bred “MxR” adaptor, which is supposed to work with all the cameras.

HOWEVER, quoting http://www.xdcamexinfo.com/sdassxs/:
“These adaptors are NOT ones I have had any personal experience with, a number of people have received them and report them working however there are also a few little problems with them.  All the problems are associated with the size of the adaptor though, not its reliability (excluding one DOA).  Apparently some adaptors are a bit tight getting in and out of some camera slots and also some SDHC cards can get a bit stuck in the adaptor due to the tight fit.”

I, and many others alike, are thinking about ordering a bunch of these adaptors from the Aussie. However, first I need to get some first-hand reviews of people who have already used this adaptor. I don’t want to end up with adaptors that are stuck in my new camera.

So any experiences with the MxR, anyone?

Much appreciated.

I have a very close friend (wink) that recently updated his own camera, and received 2 of these MXR adapters.  They have worked at first test.  Recorded short clips, then recorded 85 minutes over 2 MXR cards (with Transcend 16 gig Class 6 media) with auto switch over with no problems.  The camera became a bit warm after the 85 minute recording, this may be normal as I don’t usually record for that long.  Putting the SDHC in to the MXR is tight, but functions fine.  Most likely, you won’t have to worry about dislodging your sdhc cards in the camera unless you are pretty careless.

I forgot to mention, I recorded 1080 24p HQ.

I just don’t get why anyone would want alternative recording media other than trying to save a few $$. To me that is no reason to use something inferior.  I imagine my Sony SxS cards will last me for as long as I have the camera so it’s a once of cost…I will recover the AU$1,500 in a very short amount of time.  I just got my EX3 and it came with a 16Gb card, I also bought 2 X 32Gb cards…that’s a lot of recording time.  I was shooting on Digital Betacam and those tapes were $25 for 40mins.  I did not recycle those tapes so it was dead $$.
