RED Digital Cinema’s Jim Jannard has announced that RED will skip NAB 2009. A delay by a supplier means “too many non-working prototypes at NAB” (no snide comments, please), so RED will skip the big industry confab in favor of their own “RED DAY” event(s).
Both Avid and Apple skipped NAB 2008, and Apple is dropping trade shows altogether in favor of other, more Apple-controlled marketing channels, like Apple Events and customer contact through Apple Stores and the Apple website. RED has often been compared to Apple (mercurial, visionary CEO; “thinking differently”; rabid fanboy community), and this only amplifies the parallels. It’ll be interesting to see if RED returns to IBC or to future NABs, or if they’ll depend on RED owners and third parties like accessory vendors to spread the word henceforth.
So if you want to see the 18-85mm in the flesh (in the glass?) this NAB, or any of the other RED bits that might help you decide on a purchasing plan, better hope that Element Technica, Redrock Micro, Air Sea Land Gear (a.k.a. Toys4RED), and/or View Factor have enough kit in their booths to feed your hunger.
Zacuto (the folks in Chicago who make those mix’n’match camera support systems, as well as selling and renting camera packages) have put together a video comparing “35mm motion picture, RED, EX3, HVX200, HPX170, HPX3000, Sony EX3, Nikon D90, Canon 5D Mark II, Letus35 Ultimate and Elite DOF adapters, RedRock Micro and more.” They shot a test of a single scene with all of these combinations, and discuss the results.
If the embedded video isn’t working, or if you only see the small thumbnail, it’s available at http://vimeo.com/2437826
If you want to cut to the chase, the test description is at 5:20, and the minute-long comparison footage starts at 6:24.
Test results with images, to compare and contrast.
Our minders here at PVC have been gently encouraging us to write up “holiday lists”. They say, “people love lists—so publish a list already, or we’ll send the holiday ravens ‘round to peck out your eyeballs!” Well, I ain’t got no list (yet), but the folks at slashCAM have posted a database of over 80 camcorders, so you can compare and contrast ‘em based on your own particular criteria, and make your own danged list.
When it comes to the Canon 5D MKII, we have a ringer at our sister site – ProPhoto Coalition. Bruce Dorn is the guy Canon hired to show off it’s glory. A still photographer showing off the video prowess you ask? Well you haven’t heard of Bruce then have you? Bruce could very well have his own channel on ProVideo Coalition with the career and experience he’s had in pro video. After you’ve digested the 5D article, peruse his bio here.
We’ve only just launched PPC, but as the video and photography markets continue to coalesce, we expect a lot of articles to be of value to the PVC reader.
Bug fixes, performance improvements, and support for the REDCODE plug-in.
If you have After Effects CS4 (aka version 9.0), and if you haven’t already gotten into the reflexive habit of dismissing the dreaded Adobe Updater every time it appears, then you might like to know that an update - 9.0.1 - is now available. You can trigger an update from inside After Effects CS4 by selecting Help > Updates. (It will try to update all CS4 applications as a default; if you are in a hurry, you can disable some updates in its options.)
Here is the list of bugs that were addressed according to the release notes:
Three months, three events, in the SF Bay Area and London.
Get out, meet people, see cool things, and learn stuff. December: Learn about CineAlta cameras and different recording gammas in Cupertino. January: party with the FCP faithful at MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. February: the UK’s own miniature version of IBC takes place at Earl’s Court in London. Be there, or may your pixels be ever non-square.
