Canon Develops Ultra-Large, Ultra Low-Light, Video-Capable Sensor
Chris Meyer | 09/17
If you thought the 1D and 5D were the be-all and end-all…
The astute folks over at DP Review assembled a series of press releases about Canon’s 202 x 205 mm CMOS sensor (compared to 36 x 24 mm for the 5DmkII), which they claim can operate at 60 fps, and requires only 0.3 lux of available light (“roughly one-half the brightness of a moonlit night”). The pixel resolution has not been announced, nor has compatible lenses. In general, the larger the “pixels” (photosite receptors), the higher the sensitivity to light, and the better low-light performance. Larger sensor sizes also result in shallower depths of fields, all else being equal. According to Canon, “potential applications for the new high-sensitivity CMOS sensor include the video recording of stars in the night sky and nocturnal animal behavior.” Plus I’m sure we can think of a lot more…

Canon’s Larry Thorpe on the C300’s quad-HD sensor and “super green” sampling
Canon held a press dinner Monday night at NAB, where Larry Thorpe held forth on the Canon C300’s use of a quad-HD sensor (2x HD resolution in both H and V dimensions) and how Canon’s “super green” sampling boosts MTF and…

Compatible lenses—sounds like we’ll want something that covers an 8x10 negative (that’s inches). The good news: there’s a bunch of lenses out there. The bad news: not many are faster than f/8. Though I guess that’s less of an issue with the sensor’s low-light ability.
Perhaps more of an issue: they’re totally different from existing cinema (or 35mm-class) lenses. For starters, they breath like crazy when focusing, because you’re just moving the lens closer or farther away from the sensor—there aren’t any floating elements or groups.
That’s not to say Canon won’t come out with a line of lenses for the sensor… though that’s not to say Canon will come out with this sensor, either.
Regardless, the look of large format photography is rather distinct. I’d love to play around with it—reminds me of a ridiculous 4x5 relay system I put together a few years ago (don’t bother trying to rack focus!).
