Creative Suite 5 is Shipping

Chris and Trish Meyer | 04/30

Links to the PVC reviews of Premiere and After Effects

Less than three weeks after “launching” Creative Suite 5 at NAB, Adobe has started shipping it, including After Effects and Premiere Pro. In case you missed it in the middle of the NAB information overload, Scott Simmons has already (p)reviewed Premiere Pro CS5, and we did the same with After Effects CS5. I imagine we’ll all have a lot more to say once we get a chance to use it more in real-world situations; stay tuned…

The Upgrade paths are VERY expensive. I think a lot of folks may sit this one out for a while waiting for earth shattering news. When you also consider the added cost of the nVidia Cuda graphics card required to take true advantage of the Mercury Engine in CS5, and then for many, a new work station for 64 bit capability required, well… I truly hope the new stability and RT work out for Adobe. It all sounds like a wonderful new step forward.

I was wondering how much the 64-bit restriction was going to hold people back. I was under the impression a fair number of people may have skipped the CS4 upgrade; do you skip 2?

Or does this uncover a deeper problem where some (many? most?) may not be budgeting for upgrading their main computer (if not all of their computers) every 1.5-3 years, and all of their software (apps, OS, and plug-ins) every 1-2 years? It’s not like a pro camera which you hope to get several good years out of, or a microphone, lights, tripods, or lenses that you hope to use essentially forever…

Thanks for the reply Chris (always loved you and Trish’s training at the DV Expo’s).

Yes - skipped the CS4 as our purchase of CS3 just missed the free upgrade deadline to 4. We’ve been trying to run 3 systems and related apps - Premiere, Edius, FCP. Started out with Premiere 4.0/Photoshop/AE ... but over the years found the RT of Edius/boards just stable and darn fast. Moved into FCP because collaborating with others just made it the choice this crew was working with. The Adobe suite just started getting used less and less and them less familiar other than Photoshop (of course).

Now the Mercury engine has piqued my interest with reports of stability (finally!) and amazing RT. And of course the amazing AE will always be huge… but have been away so long it’s retraining time again - Motion is so easy now.

So it’s a wait and see how Mercury really pans out. Of course, if I had 5% of the AE talent of you and Trish, CS5 would be a no-brainer.

Thanks again for all the effort put into training so many of us.
