Designing British Road Signs

What goes into conveying information to someone busy trying to drive a car.

I am a huge fan of the BBC programme Top Gear. Aside from the fact that I’m a car nut, I enjoy the wry humor, the unusual set (standing literally in the middle of the audience), the crazy stunts, and the graphic design that goes into the vignettes on many of the cars (that would be a nice gig…). I’ve been catching up on episodes with BBC America, and stumbled across an interesting interview with Margaret Calvert: one of the people responsible for designing the motorway signs in England after WWII. With the introduction of high-speed motorways, the government realized that their standard signs didn’t work. As a result, a whole new font and set of icons were designed. Graphic designers interested in how to convey information quickly may enjoy some of her insights:

Thanks Chris - I’ve been a fan of the Transport fonts for a long time (although I tend to end up using Frutiger or Interstate).  You can still download them here:

and the Wikipedia page has links to DIN, Clearview and some of the other fonts used around the world:

I saw that episode too Chris. I am a huge Top Gear Fan. Unfortunately BBCA cuts out a lot of the content to fit in the healthy amount of commercial breaks that they must show over here so you end up missing some of the choicer bits of the show. I highly recommend renting or buying the show on DVD to see what you are missing with seeing the show on BBCA. Or get a VPN in the UK setup and just watch them on the BBC iPlayer.

That episode really did show what a major role graphic design plays in daily life.

I love the risk of grounding design, I’ve always enjoyed the signs that show accidents (think of slippery when wet). Nice blog!
