Greenscreen Resources
Chris and Trish Meyer | 09/23
Some tips; some tricks; some supplies.
As much as we like to keep up with the newest products and latest trends, some information is timeless - such as advice on shooting greenscreen. The After Effects Facebook feed forwarded a link to a very useful article by Jonas Hummelstrand of General Specialist posted back in 2006 that everyone should read before setting up a keying shoot. If I had to add one amplification, it would be to try to hire a stage that has some depth to it, so that the screen - and lighting for the screen - can be some distance behind the action; this will further blur it out, and reduce spill.
Here’s a few more links of note:
(By the way, we also overhauled the keying chapter in Creating Motion Graphics 5th Edition, including high-def sources to practice with courtesy of Hollywood Camera Work.)
If you have any other favorite resources, please feel free to post them in the Comments below!

Anyone know what green gel would be optimal for lighting a cyc with daylight (5600k) color temp lamps?
I asked the techs at Lee filters, but their answer was basically, “We suggest Fern Green and change all your bulbs to 3200k”
Pressed, they seemed unable to solidly answer what gel would best work with 5600k, and sent me several different gel suggestions, a recommendation to test, and a bunch of color theory reading material…
I don’t have time to get gel samples and run tests and still order enough of the right gel before the shoot, and I’m hoping someone has already figured this out.
Details: I’m using Rosco Digicomp Green paint on my Cyc, lit with high quality 5600k fluorescents. It’s a 70’ cyc and I’ve got a large investment in 5600k bulbs, and don’t want to change them all out for green bulbs.

A PS to last post: The paint is actually Rosco Chroma Key Green, not Digicomp Green. Probably doesn’t matter, but just in case…

You can export the results of the new 3D Camera Tracker to any application that has a way to accept AE keyframe data.
