Stop Motion Redux

Chris Meyer | 08/05

Another stop motion viral commercial. Business opportunity?

If you haven’t noticed, stop motion animation is hip right now (see previous posts by Richard Harrington and Matt Jeppsen). This example, sponsored by HP, extends the concept by adding the extra time dimension of capturing a set of printers outputting graphics for the video. I also like the fact that you get to see the handlers tweaking the equipment during some of the shots. It’s a modestly amusing way to kill a couple of minutes.

More importantly, whenever I see a trend emerge, I have to ask if there is a business opportunity here. We’re clearly seeing some companies jumping on the stop motion bandwagon as an alternate way of subliminally promoting their products. If you’re looking for an angle to scare up some new work from old clients (or foster new ones), you might want to play around with learning stop motion yourself, and pitch the idea to your Rolodex. If you make a cool one, and are willing to share how you made it, let me know and we’ll post it!

Great stop motion animation on this Fleet Foxes music video. I especially love how they’ve added depth by using the shadows as well. Simple concept, beautiful execution. Watch…

A simple speed-shift trick to reuse a single element multiple times, and make each instance appear different.

As we mentioned earlier, we’ve been busy this year creating an extensive, multi-course video training series based on…

CINEMATOGRAPHER VS. PRODUCER video as an afternoon diversion

Sure, we’ve all had this conversation haven’t we?

Here’s a fun little 2:48 video that’s been making the Twitter rounds (NSFW as there’s some language so be warned) so for those readers who aren’t on Twitter, the embed is after the jump. It’s called CINEMATOGRAPHER VS. PRODUCER, (make with the xtranormal animation…

Loving the whole stop motion style, including this ad. I finished a promo recently using still photos and time lapse using firmware hack on a little point and shoot camera:

It started out as a way of making a film in HD before I had an HD camera smile

Amazing Guy Walks Across America video

Scott Simmons | 07/26

It’s a DSLR extravaganza with behind the scenes

There’s been a great new “viral” video making rounds recently, Guy Walks Across America. It’s currently at over a half million views on You Tube and will likely continue to rise as it’s buzz grows. It’s kind of like a stop motion / time lapse and is quite an amazing accomplishment technically. There’s a behind the…
