We have written numerous articles and columns for a variety magazines over the years, including our previous long-running “Motion Graphics” column in DV magazine plus currently a monthly “Tips n Tricks” article for Artbeats.com. A summary of everything we’ve written that’s still available online can be viewed here.
It is our intention to move the “key” articles in this archive over to this site (ProVideo Coalition), to make sure you have reliable access to the best of these articles. Although some were written years ago, they still contain useful tips and concepts on both technology and design. As appropriate, we will update them information that has changed; also look for the “Postscript” sections that appear at the end of some of the articles. And of course, we will also be adding new articles as subjects come up.
If you can’t find an article on the subject you’re interested in, let us know in a “comment” to this post and we’ll see what we can do! A former student of mine emailed asking me to give him “the specs for a theatrical main title.” He doesn’t realize what he’s asking, of course. As I began a reply I realized this was way to large a topic for any short simple answer. I want to refer him to your books and training materials. My old coy of CMG 1st ed. has great info in chpt.9 on working at film resolution, but the download chapter PDFs for your later editions don’t list the same subject. Is film work well covered in the later editions? What your best resource on this topic?
PS: miss you guys at MGLA (DMA/LA), but Ko, Warren and Tony are doing a great job. Just miss you anyway.

The short answer: The specs are what the film output house tells you to deliver. Some houses have different specs, so this is a clear case where you start at the end and design your production chain backward from there.
The film chapter was last seen in Creating Motion Graphics Volume 2, 3rd Edition (available used for under $10 on Amazon.com). It was one of the chapters that got cut when we re-merged the two volumes back into one (hey - only a quarter as many people were buying Volume 2 as Volume 1!).
Trish will be speaking on film title design and issues as part of PostProduction World at NAB next week. We hope to turn it into an article to add to CMG Keyframes here down the road.
