Canon Strikes Back!

In the face of an HDSLR uprising with Sony and Nikon leading the way, Canon strikes back strong with the announcement of the highly anticiapted 60D.  According to Canon, the 60D represents the culmination of many requests from HDSLR shooters.  Yuichi Ishizuka, vice president and GM of Canon USA’s Consumer Imaging Group says “The EOS 60D has been designed to offer the image-capture and the Full HD video features customers are looking for as they continue to expand their photographic skills…”.

New Features

• Vari-Angle 3-inch Clear View anti-reflective LCD screen with 1,040,000 dot/VGA resolution.

• Manual controls for exposure.

• Manual audio levels in 64 steps allowing users to set audio levels on the rear menu screen.

• Electronic Wind Filter within the movie shooting menu.



• Multi-Control Dial, which places a Multi-Controller and Set button inside the Quick Control Dial.

• Locking dial, prevents inadvertent changes to the set shooting mode.

• In-camera processing of RAW image files.

• Image resizing function allowing you to generate lower-resolution copies without altering the your high resolution files.

• In-camera movie editing feature, allowing you to cut a video file without outside software.

• Aspect Ratio feature displays cropping lines for 1:1, 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios in addition to the standard 3:2 ratio.

• Movie Crop mode providing 7x magnification when shooting SD video.

Record Time and Speed

Record time with 60D is roughly twelve minutes according to Len Musmeci of Canon USA, which is the same as the 7D.  Musmeci went on to say that the 60D will have a speed performance in regards to writing data to the card much like the other single processor camera, the T2i.  For those seeking speed for stills and video, you should still look to the 7D.

• Canon EF and EF-S Campatible

• Full HD video capture at 1920 x 1080 resolution with selectable frame rates of 24p, 25p or 30p.

• 18-megapixel CMOS sensor, a SINGLE DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor. 

• 9-point Autofocus system and iFCL Metering System (Intelligent Focus, Color, Luminance).

A step backward to use SD cards instead of CF cards. IMO, they’re to flimsy for pro work.

Moire and Aliasing can be controlled by taking out the sharpness and reducing the contrast in the camera settings.

Clint,
    That is certainly not true of the 7d and the 5d Mk II. Frankly, I can’t see how they would help. You could certainly make moire and aliasing worse by oversharpening or bumping contrast, but reducing those cannot eliminate or hide the problem.

I just returned from the Hurlbut visuals Bootcamp, and per their recommendation we dropped the sharpness and reduced the contrast to 1, and when we did that we could see a huge reduction in these affects on the 7D with a 50mm 1.4 Canon lens.
