Newsletter Preview & Review

Scott Gentry | 10/29- 06:04 PM

Keep an eye out for the fourth PVC Pipeline | Production newsletter in November!

image

A few weeks ago, we published our ninth electronic newsletter: PVC Pipeline | Distribution, which included tutorials on the workflow from Final Cut Pro to burning a Blu-ray disc plus how to quickly get your video up on the web, as well as an interview with David Dudas of Sorenson including a review of Sorenson 360 video server service. These articles are now available for all PVC visitors to view; a list of them is included below.

Our next PVC Pipeline newsletter will return to the theme of Production. In it, Adam Wilt will give an in-depth review of the new Sony PMW-350 XDCAM EX camcorder, Steve Hullfish will provide a tutorial review of the AJA KiPro, and Richard Harrington will moderate a shootout between the Canon 5D mkII, Canon 7D, and Nikon D300s DSLRs that also shoot HD video. Sorenson 360 video server service

Steve Hullfish | 10/29- 04:42 PM

Getting Video to the masses

image

Sorenson – known widely for its compression software, Squeeze, has recently launched a video publishing server service that integrates with Squeeze, but can also be used with nothing more than a web browser to encode files. The new service is called Sorenson 360.

Most magazines or blogs prefer to separate interviews from tutorials from reviews, but this article will be a unique hybrid offering a little of all three. To start, we’ll learn a little about the service from my interview with Sorenson Media’s VP of Product Development, David Dudas.

Blu-ray and Final Cut Studio

Richard Harrington | 10/29- 04:39 PM

How to author Blu-ray discs with the new Final Cut Studio

image

There’s a good chance that HD has become a major player (or even the only format) in your work.  With the latest incarnation of Final Cut Studio, Apple offers several ways to deliver HD. You can of course go back to tape or create downloadable and streaming H.264 files.  Most requested though, is the ability to create Blu-ray discs.

From Wired magazine: The Good Enough Revolution

Scott Simmons | 09/20- 02:50 PM

The idea of a production being Good Enough is happening in professional media production today

image

Continuing with the links to other good articles that are great reads for our particular industry comes a link to a Wired article called The Good Enough Revolution: When Cheap and Simple Is Just Fine. That kinds of sums up a lot of what is going on in film and video production today wouldn’t you say? That Flip camera footage that comprises a large part of your program would have been flat out rejected on broadcast television at one point in the past but today ... it is good enough.

Surviving in Post, Another Tool to Add to the Arsenal

Terence Curren | 09/15- 05:17 PM

Take a rapidly changing market, throw in new “low to no cost” distribution methods, add two lumps of recession and you have our current business environment. And it isn’t pretty. Surviving in post has always been a challenge, but now it is a nightmare. Fortunately Philip Hodgetts’ new book “The New Now: Grow your production or postproduction business in a changed and changing world” has come along to help navigate these tumultuous times.  In spite of the lengthy title, this is an excellent guide full of helpful tips that I would recommend to anyone in our industry.

Enlightening interview about distribution with Maverick Entertainment founder and president

Scott Simmons | 08/20- 08:45 PM

Filmmaking Central podcast from July is a must listen for the serious filmmaker

image

I was catching up on podcasts recently and I got to the July 16 episode of Filmmaking Central.  On this episode host Dave Basulto spends an hour interviewing Doug Schwab, President and Founder of Maverick Entertainment. This is one of the most honest and informative discussions on feature film distribution that I’ve heard in a long time and is a great listen for anyone making movies. Blogs and podcasts often discuss the technology and craft of filmmaking ad nauseam so the good distribution discussion is often few and far between. Maverick Entertainment is a direct to video distribution company and though you as a filmmaker may be shooting for theatrical distribution the reality is that very few films see the big screen. Schwab engages in a very thorough and very honest discussion about the reality of feature film distribution. There’s a lot of great tips within the show about what distribution companies are looking for as well as tips to get your film in front of a distributor or buyer. You can listen to the episode right off of the BlogTalkRadio webpage or subscribe to the Filmmaking Central podcast (iTunes link) and look back into July for the episode.

After FCP7/FCS3… we still need DVKitchen!

Allan Tépper | 08/02- 07:47 AM

FCP7 brings many welcome exporting/sharing features, but we still need DVKitchen for the following reasons

Final Cut Pro 7 fortunately now offers many inboard “sharing” features which were very weak or non-existent before. Now FCP7 allows us to export to multiple formats and destinations in a single job (called “Back-End Batch Capability” in my DVKitchen review of March 2009). FCP7 even allows us to export “in the background”, so we can keep on editing if we’d like. Thanks to FCP7’s improved integration with Apple’s Compressor, some of the encoded formats can be published directly to web destinations, whether they be MobileMe, YouTube, or even your own FTP server (after you’ve previously made a preset destination for it in Compressor). These are all welcome improvements, which are directly accessible from FCP7. However, DVKitchen is still a vital tool (especially if you’re encoding for MobileMe, your own web server… or your client’s web server), because it includes the following unique and must-have features not included in FCP7/FCS3.

LIGHTING: Advanced Cucoloris Use Illustrated by a Solar Eclipse

Art Adams | 05/24- 11:24 AM

Q: What happens when you stack several pattern-making devices in front of a light? A: Extreme lighting goodness. Learn why here…

I love stacking cucolorii (plural of “cucoloris”) and I thought it was time to write an article about how this technique works and why I like it so much. I was a bit stretched for ideas that would illustrate this concept… and then an eclipse happened. Why that made a difference is a very interesting story…
