Quicktips 2011 Day 10: Map Media Composer keyboard arrows to FF and REW

Scott Simmons | 02/10- 07:30 AM

February 10, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip can speed along Avid Media Composer navigation

This Reader Quicktip is from Jack Jones,  a colorist (or colourist I guess I should say) working out of London who passes along a simple but handy Quicktip for Avid Media Composer. It involves remapping the up and down arrow keys on a keyboard. This matches a Final Cut Pro behavior but it is more useful as a default Media Composer keyboard configuration for the up and down arrows keys IMHO. I’ve done the same thing for as long as I can remember.

Expert Tips on Final Cut Pro

Chris Meyer | 02/09- 05:05 PM

April Fools came early this year.

Ever watch someone use (or even worse, demonstrate) a piece of software, and think to yourself “wait a minute - that’s not how you should do that…”? Then Rob Imbs of Lovely Junkie has a video for you. Rob has compiled what is no doubt years of hard-won Final Cut experience and “knowledge” into one tip-laden video of just about everything a beginner can do wrong. With a straight face. (Until the very end.) Watch it and weep. Then pass it along to an unsuspecting Final Cut Friend.

Quicktips 2011 Day 07: changing FCP filters lengths partially applied to a clip

Scott Simmons | 02/07- 08:31 AM

February 7, 2011 - Moving and extending the length of a filter applied to only part of a clip is a powerful feature

One particularly nice feature that Final Cut Pro allows you to do is to apply a filter to only part of a clip or a sequence nest. I find this particularly useful if I’m applying a non-realtime filter to a longer nest of clips and the filter effect will only happen for a very short time. Though I don’t use it a lot it can come in handy. I don’t want to lose the realtime playback for the entire clip when a small portion will only receive the filter. Thankfully FCP allows you to change the length and/or placement of that partially applied filter after it has been applied.

American Editor

Chris Meyer | 02/06- 08:21 PM

The Ballad of the Bear Wrestler

More than one person has pointed me toward the relatively new blog American Editor, written by Rob Ashe: Senior Video Editor & Opening Title Designer of Conan O’Brien’s most recent ventures among other items on a long resume. Rob is a straight shooter with a wry sense of humor, who dishes up some honest opinions and advice on working in The Industry.

Quicktips 2011 Day 06: The mappable Avid Smart Tool button

Scott Simmons | 02/06- 09:38 AM

There’s a single button in Media Composer 5 that can disable and enable the Smart Tool

Love it or hate it, the Avid Smart Tool that was introduced in Media Composer 5 is here to stay. It will continue to be refined and hopefully evolve as the software evolves but it’s worth noting there is a single, mappable button that can toggle the Smart Tool on and off.

Quicktips 2011 Day 05: Change Sequence Timecode in Media Composer 5

Scott Simmons | 02/05- 07:06 AM

Avid moved the change sequence timecode command in MC 5 and didn’t tell us

Prior to Avid Media Composer 5.0 if you wanted to change the sequence timecode of an edit you hit the key stroke command + I while in the Record window and up popped a dialog box where that could be changed. Now in 5.0 command + I opens an info window with sequence details. But the ability to change Sequence timecode is still there.

LIGHTING: Advanced Cucoloris Use Illustrated by a Solar Eclipse

Art Adams | 05/24- 11:24 AM

Q: What happens when you stack several pattern-making devices in front of a light? A: Extreme lighting goodness. Learn why here…

I love stacking cucolorii (plural of “cucoloris”) and I thought it was time to write an article about how this technique works and why I like it so much. I was a bit stretched for ideas that would illustrate this concept… and then an eclipse happened. Why that made a difference is a very interesting story…
