With the US Government Accounting Office dismissing RIAA and MPAA “research” as being lacking in any factual basis, is unauthorized distribution hurting or helping the industry?
Philip and I were asked to talk about piracy. This is a favorite subject of Philip’s and his passion shows through. Whether you agree or disagree, his arguments are strong. Check us out on Episode 16 of The Terence & Philip Show.

Given a green field, could we build a better entertainment business model?
What would the production industry be like if we had no existing industry: no established production business, no guilds, no agreements, no contracts, no established workflows. How would we go about establishing something like broadcast television so people could still make decent middle class salaries, be creative and do what they love to do.
In our longest show ever, Philip Hodgetts and I discuss this concept with special guest with Howard Brock on episode 11 of The Terence & Philip Show.

Learn how to use Sonicfire Pro 5 to create and edit music scoring for your video projects in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.
Watch as I use real-world examples of how I work using SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 5 with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 in a broadcast bumper. The first video is an “over-the-shoulder” view of the production process with little explanation of why I’m choosing specific tools, but rather a fast-paced overview of just how simple it is to select and edit the music soundtrack to work with the various parts of the video; including voice over and interview clips. The second video takes a more in-depth approach to the round-trip workflow between Premiere Pro CS5 and Sonicfire Pro 5, and why I choose specific tools for the quickest editing possible.

Philip Hodgetts and I bring our not-politically-correct opinions on Avid, Adobe, Apple, post production, production, distribution and pretty much anything we want to talk about.
I have been nagged to create and maintain a blog for years, but lets face it, I’m too lazy for that. So when Philip Hodgetts suggested we do a weekly show where we can talk about anything, I realized this was a great way to actually blog. And do it with someone who is smarter than I am. 4 episodes in and counting… check out The Terence & Philip Show.

Learn how to use Sonicfire Pro 5 to create and edit music scoring for your motion graphics projects in After Effects CS5
I’ve broken these tutorials down into three videos, using some real-world examples of how I work using SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 5 with Adobe After Effects CS5 projects, creating short production videos and motion graphics for broadcast. Whether I’m creating/editing a short video with layers of motion graphics or building a motion graphics animated opener/bumper, I can use the soundtrack creation and editing capabilities in Sonicfire Pro 5 to produce a quick, interactive workflow with After Effects CS5.

Can HP’s DreamColor LCD replace the aging army of Sony PVM-series CRTs?
I’m a colorist and finisher for broadcast, indie, and documentary filmmakers. I recently decided to evaluate the HP DreamColor as a replacement for a trusted CRT Sony PVM-20L5 I’ve been using for many years. The Sony CRT is at the end of its useful life. The question I asked myself and which this article answers: Is the DreamColor an acceptable replacement for the PVM- series of CRTs?

(2009 release)
My wife will tell you that I am a creature of habit. That definitely can be said about the breakfast cereal that I eat, and the type of video games I like to play, but it is also true of computer hardware as well. To be perfectly honest, I was an Avid purist for many years, until I had a very strict budget to work with, and I decided to purchase a Final Cut System. Now, I have both, and use the one that suits the job I’m working on the best. Well, that is also true of video capture cards. Since I started using Final Cut Pro, I have been an AJA user (Kona 3/IoHD), but one of the benefits of being a writer is that I can tread out into uncharted waters (for me) and look at new products, that will hopefully, change my opinion of them. I thought for this article I would look at Blackmagic’s DeckLink HD Extreme (2009 release).

Take a rapidly changing market, throw in new “low to no cost” distribution methods, add two lumps of recession and you have our current business environment. And it isn’t pretty. Surviving in post has always been a challenge, but now it is a nightmare. Fortunately Philip Hodgetts’ new book “The New Now: Grow your production or postproduction business in a changed and changing world” has come along to help navigate these tumultuous times. In spite of the lengthy title, this is an excellent guide full of helpful tips that I would recommend to anyone in our industry.
