A Look Back on 2010

Terence Curren | 01/13- 03:24 PM

Take a look back on what changed in 2010: cheaper (and great) technology, large sensors, 3D, the state of the business, distribution options and more.

In this episode of the Terence and Philip Show – with able assistance from Secret HQ’s Greg Huson – take a look back on what changed in 2010 from our perspective.

There’s a lot in this show from Resolve to dissolve.

A Look at Careers in Editing

Terence Curren | 10/24- 11:39 AM

Looking for a career in editing? Listen to what these experts have to say.

image

This Editors’ Lounge panel was a very special event featuring a moderated discussion with a collection of distinguished editors. Editors representing four major fields of their craft from film to reality television to online editing and more, were on hand to discuss the paths they took to become the editors they are today and talk about the craft of editing. The attendees had the opportunity to ask questions afterwards.

The discussion panel included 2-time Oscar™ nominated film editor, Billy Weber, finishing editor and colorist, Terence Curren, veteran reality-television editor, Glenn Morgan, and Emmy™ nominated trailer editor, Carol Streit. The discussion was deftly moderated by Debra Kaufman of MobilizedTV.com. Click on the link below to view the video.

Sonicfire Pro 5 with Premiere Pro CS5 Workflow Video Tutorials

Jeff Foster | 09/15- 04:26 PM

Learn how to use Sonicfire Pro 5 to create and edit music scoring for your video projects in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.

Watch as I use real-world examples of how I work using SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 5 with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 in a broadcast bumper. The first video is an “over-the-shoulder” view of the production process with little explanation of why I’m choosing specific tools, but rather a fast-paced overview of just how simple it is to select and edit the music soundtrack to work with the various parts of the video; including voice over and interview clips. The second video takes a more in-depth approach to the round-trip workflow between Premiere Pro CS5 and Sonicfire Pro 5, and why I choose specific tools for the quickest editing possible.

The Terence & Philip Show

Terence Curren | 08/14- 11:27 AM

Philip Hodgetts and I bring our not-politically-correct opinions on Avid, Adobe, Apple, post production, production, distribution and pretty much anything we want to talk about.

I have been nagged to create and maintain a blog for years, but lets face it, I’m too lazy for that. So when Philip Hodgetts suggested we do a weekly show where we can talk about anything, I realized this was a great way to actually blog. And do it with someone who is smarter than I am. 4 episodes in and counting… check out The Terence & Philip Show.

Sonicfire Pro 5 with After Effects CS5 Workflow Video Tutorials

Jeff Foster | 07/21- 11:11 AM

Learn how to use Sonicfire Pro 5 to create and edit music scoring for your motion graphics projects in After Effects CS5

I’ve broken these tutorials down into three videos, using some real-world examples of how I work using SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 5 with Adobe After Effects CS5 projects, creating short production videos and motion graphics for broadcast. Whether I’m creating/editing a short video with layers of motion graphics or building a motion graphics animated opener/bumper, I can use the soundtrack creation and editing capabilities in Sonicfire Pro 5 to produce a quick, interactive workflow with After Effects CS5.

HP’s DreamColor: A PVM CRT Replacement?

Patrick Inhofer | 06/28- 01:54 PM

Can HP’s DreamColor LCD replace the aging army of Sony PVM-series CRTs?

image

I’m a colorist and finisher for broadcast, indie, and documentary filmmakers. I recently decided to evaluate the HP DreamColor as a replacement for a trusted CRT Sony PVM-20L5 I’ve been using for many years. The Sony CRT is at the end of its useful life. The question I asked myself and which this article answers: Is the DreamColor an acceptable replacement for the PVM- series of CRTs?

Offlining 24p in Apple’s Final Cut Express

Kevin P. McAuliffe | 05/01- 02:01 AM

How your client can save money during offline, and still give you something you can use.

image

About a year ago I had a client that was working on thirteen episodes of a show, and much like most shows these days, they had no budget to work with. When they initially approached me, I told them that the easiest way to save money right off the bat was for them to do a “rough” offline (meaning that the picture was 99% locked, and I would take a day to do some minor tweaks). That way, instead of paying $5000 per week to do an offline, they could do a rough cut at home, then they could spend $1000 for a one day edit per week to sit with me to smooth things out. At least, that was the theory…

LIGHTING: Advanced Cucoloris Use Illustrated by a Solar Eclipse

Art Adams | 05/24- 11:24 AM

Q: What happens when you stack several pattern-making devices in front of a light? A: Extreme lighting goodness. Learn why here…

I love stacking cucolorii (plural of “cucoloris”) and I thought it was time to write an article about how this technique works and why I like it so much. I was a bit stretched for ideas that would illustrate this concept… and then an eclipse happened. Why that made a difference is a very interesting story…
