Ever set up your project to work in 16 or 32-bit float, and you then apply an effect, only to get into the effects window to find that the effect only supports 8-bit? Annoying isn’t it? Wouldn’t you love to know what bit depth the effect supports before you drop it onto your clip? Well, look no further than this power user tip!
Instead of using the effects drop down, use the effects and presets window, which is easily accessible from the “Window” drop down.
Now, all you have to to is scroll down the effects, and the supported bit depth is now added to the effect icon.

BTW, this feature is not unique to CS5; the Effects & Presets panel - as well as the bit depth indicator - have been around for several versions now.
I second that using the Effect & Presets panel is preferred over the Effect menu; much easier to find things. I only use the Effect menu either out of habit or to ensure others can follow instructions (it is possible to turn certain items on and off in the Effects & Presets panel, meaning an individual user’s display may differ from the defaults).
