FCPX, Is It Prosumer Or Not?
Terence Curren | 08/10
Some people get really testy when you suggest it’s iMovie Pro…
In this episode of “The Terence & Philip Show” Philip & I consider the concepts of editing introduced with Final Cut Pro X, and who it might be made for. Is it designed for “pros” or dilettantes? One thing is for sure, Philip doesn’t like me using the word “Prosumer”!

I agree that the term “prosumer” is often ambiguous, and it can definitely sound like an elitist attitude. Therefore, it’s probably best to avoid that term when trying to describe different video production segments. Here are a few examples I can suggest
:
• Video hobbyists (people who don’t make any money producing video, and just do it for fun)
• Corporate/Organizational video producers
• Traditional over the air TV and Film producers
Obviously we should polish them depending upon the situation and context. Keep up the good work at The Terence & Philip Show!
BTW, anybody interested in FCP X would likely be interested in the article I published today:
Why FCP X’s secondary monitor should be 1920x1200, not 1920x1080
Enjoy!

Great points Allan. You still have a problem with labeling gear which is where we see “prosumer” used the most.
There it makes sense as prosumer gear has more features than the consumer version at a higher price point, but not all the features of the top end gear which costs even more.
