REVIEW - Gridiron Software’s Flow

Kevin P McAuliffe | 07/14

Go with this Flow!

I have to say that as an editor/motion graphics guy/jack of all trades, I’m a pretty organized guy….or at least I thought I was.  I’m organized in the sense that my desktop (my computer on, that is) is always clean, and people can find things on my computer with little to no looking.  But what happens outside the four walls of my CPU?  When multiple editors are working on multiple files, taking assets from multiple places, what happens when I need to find something an asset, or for that matter, I need to find an asset that was used in a Photoshop layered file that was create three weeks ago.  Know what I’m talking about?  I can hear you all shouting “YES!!!!” at your monitors at the top of your lungs.  But, what do we do about it.  Well, in the past, nothing really.  We spent more time looking for assets than we did using them.  Well, that has all changed thanks to Gridiron’s Flow.  I have to say that I avoided Flow for a long time, as I didn’t think it was an application that I needed it.  Then, I decided to review it, and needless to say I can’t live without it now.

INSTALLATION

Gridiron’s Flow (GF) is available for both Mac and Windows, and has a free 30 day trial over at Gridiron’s website.  The application itself is quick to download and install, and you will be up and running in about 10 minutes.

WHAT YOU GET AND HOW IT WORKS

Now I know what you’re probably thinking, and that is “What applications are supported inside Flow?”.  Well, here’s the breakdown:

Adobe CS3, CS4 and CS5

Acrobat, After Effects, Bridge, Dream Weaver, Encore, Flash, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Soundbooth, Media Encoder, Acrobat Distiller

Apple - Final Cut Studio 2

FCP6, Motion 3, Soundtrack Pro 2, Compressor 3

Apple - Final Cut Studio 3

FCP7, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, Compressor 3.5, Color 1.5, DVD Studio Pro 4

Apple - MISC

Shake, QuickTime Player, Finder, Preview, TextEdit, Keynote (08,09), Numbers (08,09), Pages (08,09)

Microsoft

Word (2007 - Windows, 2008 - Mac), PowerPoint (2007 - Windows, 2008 - Mac), Excel (2007 - Windows, 2008 - Mac), Notepad, Explorer (XP & Vista)

MISC. Applications

Maxon’s Cinema 4D, Quark’s Quark Express 8, The Foundry’s Nuke

So as you can see, quite a wide range of products, but for editors and motion graphic designers, the meat and potatoes are covered in the support for Adobe’s CS3-CS5 and Final Cut Studio 2 (some of it) and FCS3 (all of it).  If you use any, or all of these applications, keep reading, as you are soon going to read, and see, that Flow is not something you want, it’s something you need.

It’s sweet…

Now if only they would offer the Nucleo Pro 3 for $99, I’d be set.

The product does what it says, however, you didn’t mention that the cache folder it creates is enormous and it is very difficult to delete if need/want to for whatever the reason. Also, because it has to constantly index everything all the time, the hard drive/s almost never stop spinning and thrashing.

PVC is a great site I appreciate all your efforts.

Cheers
