Some perspective on this puzzling new format
So recently Apple released specs on a new video format they are calling iFrame. What is it, and how will it affect you, the video professional? As all consumer codecs seem to trickle into the professional space in one way or another, I expect the same to happen with this format. So here’s some info to provide perspective in case you are called upon to deal with the codec by clients. Read on…

University of Wisconsin researchers and Adobe team up to smooth out amateur video footage
Here’s a sweet little bit of research in the works…Adobe and some folks at the University of Wisconsin have come up with a software solution to automatically remove shakes and wobbles in amateur video footage. Their solution automatically 3D tracks the footage, then selectively distorts the frame to compensate for wobbles and shake. Watching the video demonstration, it appears that this technique might also be effective at removing CMOS skew and jello/wobble as well. Read on below…

How to cut in FCP, grade your sequence in Color, and Compress it for the web
Editor Peter Salvia has been posting a series of video tutorials on editing with Final Cut Studio. The following is an all-in-one tutorial on cutting Canon 5D MKII footage, color correcting and grading it in Apple Color, and exporting for the web with Compressor. If you are just getting started with Color, this tutorial should get you up and running quickly. It’s a good, quick overview of common functions and workarounds you’ll run into. Check out the video tutorial below.

An extensive interview with Cineform on stereoscopic post-production
At NAB 2009, Cineform was demonstrating their comprehensive 3D workflow, using Neo3D. We stopped by to talk about these new tools for stereoscopic post-production, and along the way, Cineform’s David Newman gave us an in-depth education on 3D filmmaking and post. We’ve split the fascinating 30-minute interview into two parts, watch both below.

How to import and edit Final Cut Pro XML projects
Here’s a great little segment on Adobe TV about how to import and work with XML projects from Apple Final Cut Pro using Adobe Premiere CS4. It looks quick and relatively painless, and can even map motion keyframes between the two systems. It’s an interesting way to translate FCP projects over to take advantage of Adobe’s very useful Dynamic Link capability. The video tutorial is embedded above.

Don’t miss out on the event of the year for FCP editors!
One of the best things about attending NAB each year are the people you get to meet. The conversations and experiences shared make the trip to Vegas all the more worth it. And certainly one of the best places to mingle with like-minded folks is the FCPUG Supermeet. There is an awesome lineup of presenters at the event, and I encourage you to consider attending. It will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 5:00PM - 11:00PM at the Rio Hotel Amazon Ballroom. Registration is just $15.00, and that includes 2 raffle tickets. It’s one event that is at the top of my list again this year, and I look forward to seeing you there. Look for me, I’ll be the prematurely-greying guy in a FreshDV shirt. A short list of topics follows…

Editing and directing style capable of eliciting a common viewer response
In a study released in mid-2008, neuroscientists noted that certain styles of motion pictures are capable of exerting “considerable control over brain activity.” In the study that used fMRI imaging to study neocortex response, researchers found that the level of control exerted was linked directly to the film’s editing and directing style. One of the films screened for subjects was an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents “Bang! You’re Dead.” The findings are probably not that surprising to most experienced editors, I think many of us feel that on some level editing is a form of manipulation. However, it’s interesting to see real data on the topic. Read on…
