Video tools at a photography tradeshow? Blasphemy.
While visiting the recent PMA and WPPI photography expo’s, FreshDV got some video coverage from the tradeshow floor. We’ve posted everything over at ProPhoto Coalition, and also pared out a few segments that should be of interest to those of us in the video and filmmaking industry.
You can watch these select video-related segments here. Product notes and links can be found below.

Using the Genus mattebox with HD and DSLR rigs
In the fall of 2007, FreshDV released a detailed review series of 4 popular matte box solutions for 35mm adapter and HD camcorder applications. We tested units from Chrosziel, Cinetech and Petroff. Today we’re adding another review video for the Genus Mattebox. The Genus unit is a compact, lightweight 4x4 15mm unit that is well-suited for use with HD cameras and HDSLR rigs.

Modifying Picture Styles to increase DSLR Video Latitude
Stockholm-based Canon 7D shooter Luka has posted a wonderful tutorial on Vimeo on maximizing the dynamic range of your DSLR video. As he states in the video, the tutorial is not aimed at making pretty pictures directly from the camera…it is intended to give you more information to work with later in post and color correction. It’s a very well done tutorial, and applies equally well to Canon 5D MKII Picture Styles. It’s also rather funny. Check it out below.

Not all “subway shorts” are created equal. Jason Magbanua & Co deliver the goods.
Jason Magbanua is one of a very select group of wedding videographers that understands how to craft a story of substance and manage to meld it with cinematic visuals. It seems as though the majority of that industry manages to do one or the other, rarely a compelling combination of both. Magbanua was one of the early pioneers of the wedding Same Day Edit, and he continues to evolve and improve. His studio’s corporate and commercial work has long been an inspiration to me. And their latest creation, a demonstration of the capabilities of the new Canon EOS 7D camera, does not disappoint. Watch below.

Teaser image and video from the 2009 convergence shoot
The photographer that previously used a Red One camera to shoot Megan Fox earlier this year for Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive 2008 has upped the ante for 2009. The crew at Red provided an early production camera from the new Epic line for the 2009 shoot, and Esquire has leaked a mysterious framegrab and short video clip. So I guess that means Red might actually ship a new camera this year! Sweet.
The video clip is embedded below. For technical evaluation purposes only, of course. Enjoy.
