It’s official: indie filmmakers now have zero excuses
The other day I wrote a short post about a new product from the prolific gearheads at Zacuto…they had just announced their latest product, a support rig for the iPhone 3GS and it’s new 30fps video mode. I wondered at the time if people would take the iPhone’s video mode seriously enough to drop $295 for the Zacuto support solution.
I was almost immediately rewarded with email linkage to a music video shot entirely on the iPhone 3GS, and it’s very well done. The filmmakers also created a behind the scenes video (shot on the 5D MKII, how’s that for irony), that shows the process, and how they worked around the iPhone’s limitations. Very cool stuff. Watch both videos below…

Extensive interviews and coverage from the Paramount backlot in LA
A few weeks ago the FreshDV crew captured interviews and coverage from the Cine Gear Expo held on the Paramount backlot in Studio City. Keep an eye on this video playlist as we update it over the next few days with our coverage from the show. If you enjoy our videos, leave a comment and tell a friend about FreshDV. And thanks to our fine sponsors, Cinevate, Kessler Crane, and Cinemek for making this coverage possible.

Awesome behind the scenes shoutout to the MarkII and Redrock Micro
On the tail end of this interview with filmmaker JJ Abrams is an awesome little outtake where he discusses the camera they are shooting the interview with, the Canon 5D MKII. Turns out Abrams owns one and likes it. He seems very gear savvy and intrigued by the rig the crew is using, asking questions about the mattebox and Redrock Micro follow focus. Very cool! Check it out. There is also some discussion with the filmmaker who shot the interview over at Cinema5D forums.

4 cameras, 3 steadicams, 2 geeks, and 1 overdue wrapup video
So we wrapped our video coverage of NAB 2009 back in April, but there was one remaining segment we haven’t posted yet. On the last day of the Expo, we took a walk around the Central Hall as four cameras (three on Steadicam rigs) circled like HD vultures. The idea was to capture a discussion that wrapped up the show, all while showing the event space as we strolled around booths and products. We initially had pitched the idea to Patrick of Stillmotion, he rounded up a few other Steadicam shooters and expanded on the idea creatively…

Inspirational Brain Food for Creatives
The following two stop-motion videos are quite visually engaging and well-executed. They’ve been shot on a floor from overhead, the perspective and attention to detail is a striking effect. Be sure to watch the credits of “Sorry I’m Late” for a behind-the-scenes peek at how it was accomplished. Inspiring stuff.

Proof that the Marketing Dept at Adobe has been taking controlled substances
Check out the following Adobe CS4 commercial, done in the slightly “off” style of a Gondry or Lynch spot. It’s really odd from a plot and creative standpoint…but I personally like the lighting and set design.
