Conveying Emotion in Cinematography with Color Themes

Matt Jeppsen | 03/09

Analyzing the subtle and effective use of color in Black Hawk Down

image

Outside Hollywood has an excellent post on Color Theory for Cinematographers. In the article, the author breaks down the film Blackhawk Down scene-by-scene, showing the consistent and effective color themes used throughout. In the film, Ridley Scott and DP Slawomir Idziak chose to buck the standard color theory trends…

...instead of the standard warm=friendly and cold=harsh, they chose to turn convention on it’s head by reversing the standard themes, disorienting the viewer and supporting the overall sense of confusion and chaos in the film. The end result is very effective, and it’s an interesting study in how they pulled it off. There’s also a very cool chart analysis of the film towards the end of the article. A must read. Check it out here.

BOOK REVIEW: “How to Shoot Movies Without Shooting Yourself in the Foot”

Art Adams | 01/20

The best books about cinematography aren’t necessarily about the art of cinematography. They’re about getting all the other stuff out of the way so you can practice cinematography. This is the book that tells you what you didn’t know—but need to know—about becoming a cinematographer.

This book is not for everyone. If you don’t eat, breathe and live cinematography… maybe you should read something else. Seriously. This book may not be for you. (But if it is… you’d better not miss it.)

Pulse Width Modulation is NOT Your Friend

Art Adams | 12/15

What you don’t know about PWM may ruin your next shot—particularly if you’re using a camera with a rolling shutter!

Here’s the deal: there’s this thing called “pulse width modulation,” and under certain conditions it doesn’t play well with rolling shutter cameras. Most of the time it’s no problem, but we don’t get phone calls from…
