PMW-F3 vs AG-AF100 vs 5D MKII

Matt Jeppsen | 03/21

Comparison of Gain & Sensitivity and now updated with a Latitude comparison

image

Here’s a quick side-by-side candle-lit comparison of the Sony PMW-F3, Panasonic AG-AF100, and the venerable Canon 5D MKII DSLR. The test footage was shot by Dennis Ersöz. This video clip very neatly shows how the native sensitivity of each camera compares, and also how clean the gain/ISO is at high levels. Watch below.

It seems pretty clear that the Sony F3 performs better in each of these tests. Seeing how clean it is at high-gain is amazing. Of course, that all comes at a price…the F3 is an $13,300 camera, while the AF100 is around $4,800, and the 5D MKII is around $2,500. Note that all prices are without lens…the $18,000 F3 package with included lenses is actually a pretty sweet deal if you don’t already own glass for it.

UPDATE: Dennis has also posted a quick latitude comparison. Latitude is the ability of a given camera/sensor/format to retain highlight information as it approaches and exceeds the clipping point. In this comparison, it looks like Dennis exposed each camera appropriately for the scene, and then bumped the amount of light from his Kinoflo to overexpose the footage in steps. Watch below.

Could you supply info on:

1. Compression stream from each camera to the Vimeo video we are watching. It is a shame that we still can’t bypass the in-cam compression on the 5D. The other 2 cams can

2. Lens used - I noticed that the F-Stop on the Sony and the Panny were at 2.0, yet the Canon was at 2.8. That would seem to have an effect. I wonder what the comparison would look like using a Canon EF 35mm 1.4 lens for example.

The video appears to no longer be available.  It’s a good thing I double-checked it this morning before I sent it around to more people.  Filmmakingetc and a couple of others have passed the link around today though.  Any way it can get put back up or a new link made?

Not sure…I’ll try to contact Dennis (the video creator) and find out why it’s been removed.

Follow the link above for Dennis (http://vimeo.com/user1024664) and you’ll find the three-way comparison, as well as comparisons between the F3 and the EX1R.

Just found the re-posted video and embedded above. Also added the latest video from Dennis, a latitude comparison. Helpful stuff that Dennis has been posting…

The Panny, as I expected, is the worst across the board. That overexposure test just about made me barf - what were the Panasonic engineers thinking?

The F3 is good in the low light test, but falls short of the 5D in the latitude test - surprising, given low latitude has always been a problem with the Canons. Maybe there’s more in the low end?

Has conservatively at least 2 more stops on the 5D in my and others testing.

Sounds about right. Just seems it’s in the shadows.

Do you have a similar test for the Canon 7D?

No, it isn’t a lizard.

There are a lot of DSLR mounts out there, but this one lets you say:  “Look Mom, no hands.”
