Daily Inspiration - Coldplay’s Strawberry Swing
Matt Jeppsen | 03/05
Stunning stop-motion music video reinvents the genre
Strawberry Swing is a visually stunning stop-motion video starring Coldplay’s Chris Martin in the lead role as a flying superhero fighting giant squirrels, sea monsters, and ultimately, getting the girl. It was created in collaboration with the group Shynola, and utilizes an overhead stop-motion animation style that has come into vogue in recent years. But this video takes it to a whole new level, using perspective and live elements in a way that hasn’t been done before. You’ll no doubt watch this video a few times over, trying to solve the inevitable “how did they do that?!?” questions. Enough talk, watch below.
Coldplay “Strawberry Swing”
This video is incredibly inspiring to me, and I hope you agree. There’s also a fantastic Motionographer interview with Shynola, the creative group behind the concept, on the creative and technical challenges of this video.

Beautiful stop-motion and shadowplay on this music video
Great stop motion animation on this Fleet Foxes music video. I especially love how they’ve added depth by using the shadows as well. Simple concept, beautiful execution. Watch…

When it comes to soft light, size matters.
It’s one thing to understand that soft sources make soft shadows. It’s another thing to understand why. Fortunately a friend from the insect world can help us if we will look at soft light through his eyes.

I watched until :13 and turned if off - while I can immediateley tell it is quality work - the idea is played out. No offense to the team that built it - my honest, subjective opinion only.

Too bad you stopped it a mere 13seconds in, because you missed the creative use of perspective at 00:39 and 0:53.
Not to mention that the actor/animation interaction is brilliant at 1:15, immediately followed by an incredible perspective shifting animation sequence as Chris “falls” through the city buildings. Perspective is used again in a way I’ve never seen at 1:48, and again at 2:46 and 3:20.
Finally, the technical challenge of the ending sequence with the swirling leaves boggles the mind. I’ve seen this concept used before, sure. Yep, I can also rattle off where it’s been used before in the past. But this Coldplay video took it to a new level of complexity. And I gotta respect that.
You should give it more than 13 seconds of your time.
