iPad KeyPad Pro wirelessly controls your pro apps
Matt Jeppsen | 08/16
Create custom keymaps and control your apps with gestures
Here’s an interesting $4.99 app for the iPad; it’s called KeyPad Pro and it’s basically a wireless client/server app that allows you to control your multimedia pro applications from the iPad. It can either be used to augment your keyboard, maybe programming just certain complex commands or shortcuts into the iPad software, or control the apps fully from a distance (think client review from the couch). The server software is available for both PC and Mac (XP+ and OSX 10.5+). Read on…
We’ve talked about bringing multi-touch controls to Final Cut Pro and other NLE’s from the moment the iPad was released. The device really inspires finding new ways to use that beautiful multi-touch interface. But it may be that more rudimentary, less flashy apps like KeyPad Pro are what actually make you more prolific and help you most with your day to day tasks. If you can map a multi-touch pinch-zoom to zoom your FCP timeline, for instance, that alone would be helpful and intuitive to me (it seems like this software can do these sorts of gestures, from the description anyway). You can also download common layouts and setups for apps from the KeyPad Pro website, though they have no video/editing app layouts at this time. I’d be interested to hear if any PVC readers have tried this one out yet…

took a look at the keypad pro forum and saw some interesting plans for the future…
“KeyPad Pro version 1.5 is due in October as a free update. It will add a system for sharing keypad layouts. Users will be able to submit requests for layouts from within the app, and the store will match requests with submissions for testing. If a layout is deemed useful by our user base, it will be permanently posted on the in-app store as a free download for all. Version 1.5 will also add the functionality to add your own images for control icons, and a better icon browser (thanks to iOS4.1).”
“We are currently working on layouts for (in order of priority): Aperture, Cinema 4D, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie. Aperture’s layout is due within a week or so.”

I wonder what the latency is like for a wireless device or if it can be operated wired.
It would be great to have virtual faders for Sound Track Pro or other DAW’s but the response needs to be pretty much real time.
