The second day of the hottest equipment show in LA

Cine Gear Expo on the blazing-hot Universal backlot

Day 2 of Cine Gear Expo dawned sunny and hot—our in-car temperature display registered 102 degrees Fahrenheit by 1:30pm. Despite the heat, there were plenty of things worth seeing.

New MacBook Pros Tomorrow? (UPDATED)

Scott Gentry | 06/09- 09:00 AM

With all of the iPhone 3G hype, could it be “one more thing”?

Update:  Well, no new Mac offerings outside Me.com (which looks to be pretty cool), and of course the 3G iPhone.  Where’s the iChat?  Where’s the MacBook Pro love?  Where’s the “One more thing”?

For a creative business the iPhone is almost a must-buy.  3G, video, enterprise and more.  Heck you can demo your demo reel on your phone!  But where’s the Mac love Steve?

Yesterday’s post:

I have absolutely no evidence, but boy was I and a large part of the MBP community disappointed in early spring when we didn’t get a new fresh MacBook Pro design.  I’m personally betting we’ll see a new design, with keyboard and touch similar to the MB Air.

Beyond iPhone, anyone have any other thoughts?

Maelstrom - Preproduction

Adam Wilt | 06/05- 11:17 PM

A whirlwind scramble to gather gear for a Rob Nilsson film

About a week ago, Tim Blackmore and I learned that we were providing tech support for Rob Nilsson’s upcoming film, “Maelstrom”, a Direct Action workshop film with four actors. We knew it was going to be shot with an EX1 (which we have), handheld (EX1, handheld? hmmm), with the wide-angle adapter if at all possible. Cool, sounds like fun, what’s the schedule?

The Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update

Richard Harrington | 06/01- 04:20 AM

What it Means to Media Folks.

I know a lot of folks who are hesitant to upgrade....  I admit, I’ve been burned by installing updates as soon as they come out… but hey, that’s why I’m an early adopter.  The latest Mac update looks to include several important bug fixes and enhancements.  Here’s a few that tip the scale in favor of installing.

• Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices.
• Fixes an issue in which certain attached hard drives may not show up in the Finder.
• Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras.
• Improves 802.1X behavior and reliability.
• Improves reliability when using Time Capsule.
• Fixes reliability issues with authenticated RSS feeds.
• Addresses compatibility issues with Aperture 2.
• Addresses reliability issues when performing a full restore from a Time Machine backup.

You can access the update through your Apple Menu....  I’ve been running it for several days and all seems happy.  Additionally, several new pro digital cameras were added for Raw support.

More RED Res Testing: The Mystery(ium) Resolved

Adam Wilt | 05/07- 06:27 PM

A new chart shows what this camera (and several lenses) can really do.

I obtained a new, 4K resolution test chart at NAB, and aimed RED ONEs running build 15 version 2.2.5 at it using four different lenses: a 50mm Super Speed, a 50mm Ultra Prime, a 18-50mm RED zoom, and a 24-290mm Optimo. Cutting to the chase: I’m pleased to report that I see detail extinction at about 3.2K, confirming the numbers RED and others have claimed.
