Tip: Add “Missing” Finder Tools
Mark Christiansen | 04/13
Clipboard Sharing and Teleport sit in the menu bar to work between systems, while Pathfinder revolutionizes file browsing itself
ClipboardSharing is an oldie but still (at least for me) solid goodie – a menu bar utility that lets you send your clipboard (you know, when you “copy” something) over to another machine to be pasted. It has amazing capabilities such as supporting multiple clipboards and allowing the operation even when the systems aren’t sharing drives with one another.
More up to date and, for many users, superseding this is Teleport, which allows you to drag and drop files directly from one system to another – you literally can move your mouse cursor over to the screen of another machine. You can also synchronize the pasteboard between systems. Via a Preferences Panel, you have control over how easy it is to switch systems (if it’s too easy, it can be annoying to trip it when you don’t want to).
That was going to be the end of my tip, and then I decided to check in on Pathfinder. I’ve long admired the ability of this Finder-window replacement software, except that in past versions it was just too ugly – too much chrome.
It really does too many useful things to list here (suggest watching the video): superuser operation that seems actually to work, tabbed Finder browsing, work with a file in the terminal without opening Terminal, and some really smart design improvements on the finder, like allowing Cover Flow without having to use a list view and a copy target allowing you to move files without multiple windows.
Best of all, the latest version of Pathfinder looks much more like the Finder itself, just with more widgets. It’s been around since August, so if I seem late with this – that’s what I get for not listening to Macbreak Weekly lately.
