Pause NYC

Alan Shisko | 10/31- 10:39 AM

The fine folks at Flash-In-The-Can have finally seen the light and are exploring how pixels move around. Vectors… phsaw! So very narrow-band.

Pause: Ideas in Motion is an “exploration of concept and design within Broadcast and Film”. Sez Shawn Puckness, founder of FITC, “Attendees can expect a very dynamic event with opportunities to engage, learn and connect with the best creative minds in the industry.” BTRY, Digital Kitchen, GMunk, MK12, UFO and many others… oh be still my beating heart! And of course don’t discount the legendary FITC parties. All work and no play makes Alan a dull boy, after all.

This looks like it’ll be a very exciting little confab- a bit of a tonic in the midst of a great deal of economic uncertainty- and if the stars align I hope to attend. And thanks to the fine folks at FITC, I’ve also got free full event passes that I’ll give to the first two people that reply to me directly…

New Features in After Effects CS4: Part 3

Motionworks | 10/25- 06:40 PM

Up until CS4 the only way to work with true 3D objects in After Effects was to use a plug-in such as Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator. Now thanks to Live Photoshop 3D, 3D objects can be imported directly without the need for a plug-in. As you’ll see in this tutorial, it’s still early days but certainly gives an idea of the direction in which After Effects may be heading. Watch tutorial

Can I Use This In My Video?

Mark Spencer | 10/06- 03:52 PM

Copyright “Calculator” Tells You If You Can

Copyright law is complicated, and it can be difficult to determine if a certain song, image, or video can be used without obtaining the copyright holder’s permission. I’ve come across an interesting site that does a great job at simplifying the process of determining if a certain work is covered by copyright or not.

Just drag the slider to the appropriate publication date (of course, you need to know this…) and it will tell you whether permission is required and what the copyright status is. Very slick. See it here.

A Modest Proposal

image

One of my local heroes, Stu Maschwitz, has posted a very intriguing article proposing that Adobe integrate After Effects with Premiere Pro. It’s required reading, IMHO, for both Adobe and Apple. Especially Apple, from whom we have seen very little as Adobe has been actively pushing the bar forward in the post-production realm. Check it out here.

The End of the DVD Reel

Alan Shisko | 10/01- 12:53 PM

image

There. I said it. DVDs are done like dinner. Disappered like dodos. Disposed of like dirty dishes. Dissapated like disparaging alliterations that I’m now going to stop, please and thank you. Yes, I’ve burned my last DVD, and I’ll be a richer, more dynamic and connected man for it.

Getting the Most out of Motion

Mark Spencer | 10/27- 12:34 PM

12 Tips for Improving Motion’s Performance

One of the most enjoyable features of Motion is its ability to play back even moderately complex projects in real time - allowing for a type of interactive development process where you can add and animate layers while the project plays back. In fact, the real-time playback feels so intuitive and natural after only a short time that it becomes quite addictive - to the point where it can be really annoying when the performance begins to slow down.

Apple has recently revised the entire Final Cut Studio section of their website, adding a large amount of descriptions, images, and video training on Motion. You can see some short videos on key Motion features here.
