NAB 2009 Video - Adobe Flash and Story

Flash for settops and concept software for production

Adobe’s big announcement at NAB seemed to be centered around the integration of Flash into settop boxes, bringing it into the livingroom. They also were showing a concept software product called Adobe Story, which helps round out their complete integration from initial creative concepts all the way through post-production. We stopped by for a demo of both announcements.

Tools to fix CMOS Rolling Shutter artifacts in post

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year or so, you are probably aware of what CMOS rolling shutter is, and the potential image problems it can create in certain shooting situations. At NAB 2009, The Foundry was showing an early version of a software toolset in Nuke to help resolve certain undesirable image issues created by CMOS rolling shutter. They were kind enough to give us a demonstration of these tools.

NAB 2009 RED Reel Online

Not the same as 4K, but definitely entertaining and pleasing to the eye.

The RED reel that showed at NAB 2009 is now viewable online (right click to download it).

There are even a couple of shots on there from a shoot I was on as fx supervisor. It’s a gorgeous, cinematic reel and an entertaining viewing.

Redrock Micro’s new rigs for DSLR video

At NAB 2009 a popular topic was convergence…a good example of this are the new Canon 5D MKII still/video cameras. But as good as these cameras are, the form factor leaves something to be desired. We stopped by Redrock Micro’s booth to check out their their highly-configurable DSLR shooting rigs, designed to eliminate some of the shooting and handling issues associated with these DSLR cameras that are still designed primarily for photography.

I love stacking cucolorii (plural of “cucoloris”) and I thought it was time to write an article about how this technique works and why I like it so much. I was a bit stretched for ideas that would illustrate this concept… and then an eclipse happened. Why that made a difference is a very interesting story…
