Adobe Responds to Jobs’ Flash Bash

Janet Lafleur | 03/05- 07:59 PM

Adobe questions iPhone’s usefulness as web device without Flash.

Adobe’s Rich Internet Application Evangelist Ryan Stewart countered Jobs’ complaints about Flash in his blog on ZDNet. Citing 450 million Flash-enabled devices currently in circulation, with 1 billion expected by 2010, Stewart wrote, “I’d even go as far as to say that the web experience isn’t complete on the iPhone until some kind of Flash support is added.”

Stewart advocates for Flash Lite in mobile devices while Jobs wants something more akin to the full desktop version of Flash on the iPhone. Since no one outside of Apple has witnessed Flash performance of any sort on an iPhone, no one knows what Jobs means when he says Flash performance is in adequate. But many have openly suspected that Apple never intends to support Flash on the iPhone. Robert X. Cringely put it best back in December when he wrote:

One product I believe WON’T be coming soon from Apple is a Flash plug-in for the iPhone. Though this was at one time promised, it is hard to say how real that promise ever was because of the strategic importance of Apple’s WebKit—the basis of the Safari browser on Mac, Windows, and now the iPhone and iPod Touch…

...The point of WebKit for Apple was to define an open source standard for rendering web pages on all sorts of Internet-enabled devices. This also explains why Apple used KHTML instead of Gecko or its own web engine for Safari—even though KHTML was terrible at rendering web pages that were optimized for Internet Explorer. KHTML is the only rendering engine that can pass the Acid2 web-rendering test, and following a standard was more important to Apple than correctly rendering poorly written web pages.

Which brings us back to the lack of a Flash player or plug-in for the iPhone, which is the single greatest reason why we do not yet see true third-party iPhone applications. Had Apple allowed a Flash player on the iPhone, it risked having Flash—rather than the Apple-preferred Ajax—become the dominant iPhone web application development environment.

With so many other mobile vendors able to make Flash work, three months later Cringley’s assertions make sense.

Steve Jobs Trashes Flash for iPhone

Scott Gentry | 03/05- 10:41 AM

Says it isn’t likely to find its way to the iPhone soon

I find that news for video developers for the small screen very disappointing.  Particularly when YouTube works just fine on my iPhone.  Steve goes into depth explaining some technical reasons for the lack of Flash, but in the end basically pushes the ball into Adobe’s court to make it happen.

Without trying to pick sides here, there seems to be a fast growing adoption of the iPhone and after this Thursday’s SDK expected announcements, the iPhone expansion will seemingly continue at perhaps an even faster pace.  So where does that leave video developers for mobile applications?  There’s Quicktime, and perhaps that’s the real point here.  Is Apple simply not working hard on Flash acceptance because it wants greater use of Quicktime?  I wouldn’t doubt it, but what do I know?

dvGarage Announces Conduit Suite

Scott Gentry | 03/05- 10:00 AM

Powerful Suite for High-end, Real-time Nodal Compositing; Includes Free Three-month Membership to Pixel Corps

SAN FRANCISCO — March 5, 2008 — dvGarage, a provider of tools and training for the next generation of media artists, today announced Conduit Suite, the latest update to its line of Conduit nodal compositing tools. Introduced through Conduit Suite is Conduit Live, dvGarage’s powerful new standalone nodal capture tool that offers real-time video compositing and analysis of any form of digital footage live. Conduit Studio also offers new users the latest version of Conduit for Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, along with Conduit versions for Apple Motion and Apple Final Cut Pro. In addition, the Conduit Suite includes a free three-month Pixel Corps membership (a USD $200 value), an hour of video training and a quick-start guide. Conduit Suite is available for download at http://www.dvgarage.com.
“Conduit Studio will have a tremendous impact on the overall workflow of today’s compositors, directors and artists by offering flexibility, advanced architecture and powerful tools in one solution,” says Alex Lindsay, dvGarage founder and chief architect. “Conduit also utilizes the processing speed and power of the computer’s GPU; as a result users are seeing better performance and color precision than an application can offers on its own, and rendering is done in real time.”
Developed in partnership with Lacquer’s Ben Syverson and Pauli Ojali, Conduit utilizes Apple’s FxPlug technology to combine high-end nodal compositing with high-performance Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) acceleration, providing users with a powerful variety of visual effects compositing tools that render in real time. By relying on the GPU, Conduit provides blazing fast render speeds to augment the power of an “open-ended” compositing environment. As a result, users can do complex effects, even to HD frames, without incurring much or any delay.
