SACHTLER 4-IN-ONE SOOM WINS NAB AWARDS

Scott Gentry | 05/20- 06:53 PM

Las Vegas – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand received five prestigious awards at the 2008 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention for its 4-in-one camera support device, the SOOM. Jurors for the TV Technology STAR, DV Black Diamond, Videography Vidy, Digital Content Producer NAB Pick Hit and The 4EVER Group Product Innovation Award, each presented the SOOM with top honors.
The SOOM consists of a tripod, a monopod and a baby tripod, designed for use with Sachtler’s FSB fluid heads as well as other 75mm bowl fluid heads. The tripod and monopod can be combined to create the SOOM Hi-Pod system to place the camera where it can shoot over crowds or other obstacles. In keeping with Sachtler’s slogan, “Set your ideas in motion!” the SOOM’s modularity offers camera operators maximum flexibility in day-to-day production, enhancing freedom for spontaneous creativity.
The SOOM can be converted from its various configurations easily and swiftly, without the use of tools. In its various configurations, the SOOM offers a height range of from 8.1” (20.5cm) to 8’4” (250cm), with a payload range from zero up to 19.8 lbs. (9 kg). The SOOM itself weighs just 12.7 lbs. (5.8 kg) and comes in a protective trolley / backpack bag.
The Sachtler booth in the Vitec Group village on the convention’s exhibition floor saw a steady stream of traffic from broadcast and video professionals wanting to look at and demo the SOOM. “This product truly raises the bar when it comes to versatility. So it’s no surprise that the SOOM attracted a diverse range of camera operators at NAB,” explained Bob Carr, President of Camera Dynamics Inc., a Vitec Group company.

Rendering Motion Projects in Final Cut Pro

Mark Spencer | 05/20- 12:08 PM

The key to dramatically faster render times

If you have begun to explore Final Cut Studio’s application integration by embedding your Motion project files into your Final Cut Pro sequence, you may have noticed a rather large increase in render time for that sequence.

Part of the cause of the increased render time is due to the level of complexity of your Motion project, but there’s a setting in Final Cut Pro that can dramatically reduce render times with little to no impact on the quality of your Motion project—except for certain types of projects.

Cinema Craft Encoder MP for Compressor 3

Brian Gary | 05/14- 12:05 PM

High Quality MPEG-2 Encoding for Final Cut Studio 2

Cinema Craft, the industry leader in MPEG-2 encoding for DVD, is going to release a Compressor 3 plug-in by the end of this month. I wrote an article on Ken Stone’s site that takes a look at both the plug-in itself and the technology behind it…the Cinema Craft Xtream encoding engine. The majority of Hollywood releases on DVD have been encoded using the Xtream engine, and it’s the same engine that’s at the core of the Cinema Craft Encoder MP plug-in for Compressor.

In addition to high quality, Cinema Craft Encoder MP is a full Compressor plug-in (vs. a QuickTime Component) so it has access to all of Compressor’s features like frame controls and geometry.

If you’re going to be in Los Angeles on May 21st, 2008, I’m going to do a demo of the software at the May LAFCPUG meeting.
