Antik Technology Develops Set-top Box for Sisvel Technology’s 3D Tile Format

PVC News Staff | 09/27

Sisvel Technology has announced a technical partnership with Antik Technology for the development of hardware supporting Sisvel Technology’s 3D Tile Format. The first of Antik’s 3D Tile Format-enabled devices — the Juice 3D Extreme HD 3DTV IP/DVB set-top box — will be shown at Electronic Asia on the Sisvel Technology booth (5F-F02).

Juice 3D Extreme is a high-end hybrid DVB/IPTV set-top box with powerful processing for an optimal TV, Web, and gaming experience. Juice 3D has been developed to provide state-of-the-art delivery of 3D TV, with a 3D Electronic Programme Guide user interface and high-quality 3D video rendering. With its support for the 3D Tile Format, Juice 3D Extreme offers to the market a product that constitutes a highly effective receiving platform for those broadcasters and IPTV operators looking for cost-effective, backward-compatible expansion of 3D services, without requiring additional bandwidth for dedicated 3D channels.

“We can see great opportunities from the upcoming switch to 3D delivery with the 3D Tile Format,” said Igor Kolla, Antik Technology’s CEO. “The backward-compatibility it provides is a really important advantage that enables a smooth and cost-effective move to 3D broadcasting for content providers, delivery platforms, and end-users. Our cooperation with Sisvel Technology has resulted in the world’s first 3D Tile Format set-top box for IPTV, and greatly extends Antik’s portfolio of solutions. Juice 3D Extreme also benefits from native OpenGL support, which allows middleware developers to bring end-users unique 3D experiences.”

Sisvel Technology’s 3D Tile Format offers significant advantages over current 3D transmission methods. The 3D Tile Format provides better quality images for 3D content compared to the existing frame-compatible formats, and maintains backward-compatibility, allowing viewers not equipped for 3D to view the transmission as 2D images. The reconstructed right and left images maintain their original spatial and temporal resolution, giving viewers of both versions the full benefit of the original picture, and the transmission of both 2D and 3D can be achieved without the need for increased bandwidth. All these remarkable advantages are brought by the 3D Tile Format in a convenient package that is very easy to implement in any H.264 compatible platform without significant impact on pre-existing architectures.

Paolo D’Amato, CEO of Sisvel Technology, commented: “We are delighted that Antik Technology has developed the Juice 3D Extreme — a highly effective solution that will help 3DTV grow beyond its early beginnings into a more widely consumed viewing experience.”

A few cool things I saw at the show that didn’t fit into any other articles.

NAB is too big a show in too short a time to see more than a fraction of it. I’ve covered a few things in some depth (as have other PVC folks), but there’s plenty more that slips by without proper coverage. Here, I have a few photos…

I give the new 3D Camera Tracker some pretty crazy footage to track

Since the announcement of the Adobe CS6 Production Premium was made, there are a lot of great tutorials and examples made with the product to show off the new features. Most use nicely shot footage with dolly shots or smooth steady-cam work with lots of great contrasting detail to track, which…
