Tutorial - How To Get The Most Out Of Your Easy Setup Part 2
Kevin P. McAuliffe | 11/04- 09:56 AM

In the first of our three part look at the Easy Setup (ES) in Final Cut Pro, we took an in-depth look at the Capture Presets (CP), and really got in there and examined what each one of the settings did.  For part two, we are going to look at what I think is the next logical step in the process, and that is the Sequence Settings, and then we are going to wrap everything up in part three by looking at the Device Settings, and how you can tie everything together to your advantage.

Making “One Man, One Vote”
Adam Wilt | 11/03- 06:19 PM

Production and post for a seven-minute short.

Ten years ago a fellow named Marshall Spight posted a challenge on DV-L called “Throwing Down the DV Gauntlet”, in which he said, “everyone talks about shooting serious dramatic films with DV, but does anyone actually do it?” I responded, and we wound up making a 20-minute short called “The Beautiful Thing” using Sony DCR-VX1000s, the first 1/3” 3-CCD DV camcorders. It came out so well (it was for a time the top-rated dramatic film on iFilm.com, an early and long-defunct predecessor to YouTube) that we set about making a short political drama/comedy (?), “One Man, One Vote”. This one gave us a few more challenges.

The RED Camera and Green Screen
Art Adams | 11/03- 06:08 PM

What you need to know before you learn the hard way

After working in this business a while (this year was 21 for me) I find that I don’t worry about venturing into the unknown. And three weeks ago green screen with the RED was certainly an unknown for me.

Avid Gems #7
Steve Hullfish | 11/02- 07:13 PM

Advanced Tips and Techniques for Avid editors

I wasn’t sure if anyone was reading these, so I stopped for a few weeks. Then I got a very nice comment from Ra-ey Saleh who has been reading and learning from the tips, despite being an experienced Avid editor. He also asked if he could suggest a tip, so I’ll start this week with a great tip. Essentially, it’s nothing more than a common button, but it does perform hidden wonders, which is the whole point of some of these gems.

Color Correction - Secondaries Video Tutorial
Steve Hullfish | 10/29- 02:23 PM

Another example of how to use Secondary Color correction in Apple’s Color

Here is a video tutorial - one of a series based on my book “Color Correction for Video,” out in December from Focal Press - showing how to do secondary color correction on a typical image. This footage is from Artbeats. In it, I “qualify” (another term for “select") the color of the baseball jerseys in the shot AND the color of the grass in the infield and change it without affecting the other colors in the footage.

Autodesk+RED Workflow Guide
Chris Meyer | 10/29- 09:56 AM

Autodesk release a white paper on using the RED One with Smoke, Inferno, Flame, Flint, and Lustre.

The RED One camera and its ability to capture large frame size, RAW-format files has certainly ignited the imagination of filmmakers and videographers. But its unusual file format and requirements has also created a lot of head-scratching among users trying to find the most efficient way to send RED footage through a normal production pipeline.

To this end, Autodesk just released a white paper that covers using RED One footage with their Smoke, Inferno, Flame, Flint, and Lustre systems. It covers shooting, lighting, color spaces, proxies, going from offline to online, audio, finishing and final output including suggested settings, as well as an appendix on RED-specific applications and where they fit into the workflow. In other words, this isn’t a brochure; it’s a mini-handbook for users that describes the current recommended practices in some detail.

You can download the white paper here. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of some of its suggestions:
