NAB 2011 - Sunday Seminars
Adam Wilt | 04/11- 09:31 AM
I sampled several seminars in the Post|Production World and Digital Cinema Summit.

DP Brian Pearson wields an EPIC as RED’s Ted Schilowitz watches.
On Sunday I sat in on several classes and sessions, to get a feel for the non-show-floor goings-on at NAB. Herewith, my fragmented, barely-edited notes.

SCCE=Single Chip Camera Evaluation - all the cameras you’d care about on Tuesday
Hey all -
One of the (many) reasons I haven’t been writing lately has been I’ve been up to my neck in the SCCE. What’s that? The Single Chip Camera Evaluation. Zacuto started the idea and Bob Primes ASC designed and supervised all the testing. I was one of the planner/organizers, as well as post supervisor and ran around and did a bunch of stuff on set. Tuesday night, 6-8 pm Content Theater. Here’s the press release after the jump:

Do you work in the broadcast industry? What does “broadcast” mean?
Allan Tépper | 04/09- 12:08 PM
The term “broadcast” has multiple meanings and contexts.
Do you work in the broadcast industry? What does the word broadcast mean to you? If you work for a radio or TV station or network in almost any capacity, you probably consider yourself to be a broadcaster. If you’re a stringer (an independent videographer who shoots news for TV), then you probably consider yourself to be a broadcaster too. If you manufacture or sell “broadcast” cameras or other equipment, then you probably consider yourself to be part of the broadcast industry. There was a time when people questioned whether a particular camera, recorder or other device was “broadcast quality” or not. As a certified translator, I am very aware of a particular word’s many nuances, especially when someone asks me to translate that word. In this article, we’ll explore and define different meanings of the term broadcast in various contexts. Then these meanings will become reference points for upcoming articles.

Is Netflix the “New” Studio Model?
Terence Curren | 04/04- 08:01 PM
Netflix is making it’s own programming now. What does this mean for the existing networks and cable outlets?
Philip and I consider the changes to the financial dynamics caused by Netflix’s funding of “House of Cards.” Is Netflix a new studio model? Where’s the opportunity for innovation in programming if everything is data driven? Are we trading one set of controllers for another?

Tantalizing News From Telestream
Bruce A Johnson | 03/31- 07:44 AM
Apple ProRez Encoding On The PC?
It’s no secret that I am a PC user. I’m very happy with the performance of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (and all the other programs in the Adobe suite) on my HP Z800 machine. However, some of my client’s end-users are Mac people, and have at different times demanded output in the Apple ProRez codec…
,,,which, of course, PCs cannot do. At least, until now, if what Telestream has to say pans out. Imagine my interest when I saw this headline in an email:
Telestream Enables Encoding to ProRes on Windows Server Products
Details as of now are hazy, and I have asked for clarification. But if this turns out to be what it sounds like, it could be a great step forward in making peace between the Windows and Apple editing camps.
Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? What do you think?

No More HDCAMSR Stock! Now What?
Terence Curren | 03/26- 02:11 PM
The tape shortage crisis and what it means to production and post.
Terence and Philip start discussing the tape shortage crisis – particularly HDCAM SR – caused by the situation in Japan: is tape dead, or will it merely lead to a resurgence of D5? Who’s accepting file-based delivery, is that even practical, and who gets to drive the need for tape delivery?
Remember, “No-one ever voluntarily changes their workflow”!
Considerations of tape shortage leads to discussion on archiving non-tape sources, and the issues surrounding that.
