Scott Gentry

Scott Gentry started his career as a child actor then moving to ABC All My Children first in production straight out of college, then in front of the camera for a short stint as a regular walk-on (woo-hoo!).

Scott also worked the stadium camera for NY Jets and Giants games, as well a a multitude of events at the Meadowlands arena in NJ. From there he got into publishing and 6 months after sending his resume to DV magazine, he was the publisher. DV went from last to first place and Scott moved on to AV Video Multimedia Producer and led the team to turn that into Studio Monthly and launch Studio Daily.

Scott founded and helped establish PVC by gathering the best writers and video gurus in the market and putting them all in one place.

Google and Creator of Family Guy Strike a Deal

Here’s another new ad model, and this one is likely to work…

There is a great article in the New York Times about a new ad model being tested by Seth MacFarlane and Google.  As I understand it, the creator of Family Guy (my personal favorite show), is going to create (50) 2-minute shows that will be placed via Google Adsense.  Whereby the mini cartoons will be targeting the correct demographics via Google’s code.  In addition, these new cartoons will be supported by advertising within, around, and as preroll.

Besides a clever approach, I think this can only create more opportunity for video professionals.  It also scares me a little about how pervasive Google has really become.

Our own Steve Martin was at the Adobe booth and describing how being an FCP editor, you can still benefit from Adobe’s CS3.  Most know this, but it’s still an interesting watch.

Cable Salaries

According to MultiChannel News:
With the consolidation of its ownership into one public company expected by the end of the third quarter, Discovery Holding, which includes cable network powerhouse Discovery Communications, filed its first proxy statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, revealing among other tidbits that founder and chairman John Hendricks received nearly $58 million in compensation last year.  I am so in the wrong vocation.

New MacBook Pros Tomorrow? (UPDATED)

With all of the iPhone 3G hype, could it be “one more thing”?

Update:  Well, no new Mac offerings outside Me.com (which looks to be pretty cool), and of course the 3G iPhone.  Where’s the iChat?  Where’s the MacBook Pro love?  Where’s the “One more thing”?

For a creative business the iPhone is almost a must-buy.  3G, video, enterprise and more.  Heck you can demo your demo reel on your phone!  But where’s the Mac love Steve?


Yesterday’s post:

I have absolutely no evidence, but boy was I and a large part of the MBP community disappointed in early spring when we didn’t get a new fresh MacBook Pro design.  I’m personally betting we’ll see a new design, with keyboard and touch similar to the MB Air.

Beyond iPhone, anyone have any other thoughts?

Ballmer Says Print is Dead

Don’t tell the print publishers just yet…

I was a print publishing executive for nearly 20 years.  When the dot.com boom hit, many cried that print is dead.  It wasn’t.  It’s now a dead man walking and I for one, agree with Ballmer.

Not only can you get your information far faster, deeper and at 60 frames per second online, you also are saving the planet.  Seriously saving the planet.  Beside ink, paper, shipping, etc, it’s crazy how many magazines are wasted every month.  For newsstand publications, if you sell at 50%, you are doing very well.  Now think of magazines like Time, NewsWeek, Playboy, Sports Illustrated and how many copies they sell on a weekly or monthly basis.  Not only are the magazines that sell going to eventually end up in the landfill, likely more than 100% more are thrown out having never even been read.

Having run some great print magazines like DV, Studio Monthly, Film & Video, CableWorld, etc, I’m much happier working on PVC and preparing the launch of several sister online sites.  Print isn’t dead yet, but it very possibly is a dead man walking.

From the start, the goal of ProVideo Coalition was to launch sister sites with the same business model – 40% of the advertising revenue going directly to the writers. 

We’re on the lookout for great Audio writers for ProAudio Coalition.  Ideal candidates will have a name in the industry, significant articles under their belt, or an already established blog on Audio.

Motion Graphics and Creative Inspiration

You are deep in the middle of a complex project, racing to beat a tight deadline, and you’re stuck. Where do you find that creative spark? For me, the last place in the world is in front of a computer. I find that when I’m sitting at the computer, it’s time for perspiration, not inspiration. In other words, if my idea is already at least partially formed, I can get busy executing and problem solving. But coming up with a new approach? Never happens in front of a screen for me.
