Scott Gentry

Scott Gentry started his career as a child actor then moving to ABC All My Children first in production straight out of college, then in front of the camera for a short stint as a regular walk-on (woo-hoo!).

Scott also worked the stadium camera for NY Jets and Giants games, as well a a multitude of events at the Meadowlands arena in NJ. From there he got into publishing and 6 months after sending his resume to DV magazine, he was the publisher. DV went from last to first place and Scott moved on to AV Video Multimedia Producer and led the team to turn that into Studio Monthly and launch Studio Daily.

Scott founded and helped establish PVC by gathering the best writers and video gurus in the market and putting them all in one place.

Newsletter Update

Keep an eye out for the second PVC Pipeline | Post newsletter next week!

image

A few weeks ago, we published our fourth electronic newsletter: PVC Pipeline | Production, which included a pair of equipment reviews, a wrap-up of NAB, plus an inexpensive trick for offlining 24p material. Subscribers had exclusive access to these articles for the past few weeks. These articles are now available for all PVC visitors to view; a list of them is included below.

We are about to publish our fifth newsletter, which will be the second edition of our PVC Pipeline | Post publication. It looks to be another must-read, with Richard Harrington showing how to make your Flash video content searchable, Chris Meyer explaining the workflows required by the new pixel aspect ratios introduced in Adobe Creative Suite 4, Scott Simmons giving Final Cut Pro editors a primer on how to use Avid Media Composer, and more. To receive exclusive access to these articles before everyone else, click here for your free subscription!

Have You Ever Screwed up a Live Feed?

Boy I have…

image

I’ve made a few errors in my day, and when you’re working with a live feed, you can be in for a world of hurt, embarrassment or both.

Back in the day, I used to work at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey.  I did myriad of jobs including camera for the Giants, Jets, horse racing, special events and more.  Over time, I took a regular position inside from the cold an managed the live simulcast of the horse racing from the Meadowlands.  Not super glamorous mind you, but it was evening work, and it left my days free to pursue freelance and other such things.

As you may know, the Canon lenses on the Ikegami’s used there are incredible in their focal adjustments.  From New Jersey, you could zoom in real tight to the Empire State building and as a man, whatever pretty young woman that might happen within view was ultimately a target (boy are men pigs or what?).  With all men on camera and in the control room, except for one brave woman, the imagery and the communication over the headsets can get rather…interesting.

Sea&Sea Releases Underwater Housing for Canon 5D MKII

more at ProPhoto Coalition

image

Rather expensive indeed.  However, depth of field, still images, 1080p.  I think we need one for a long term test…

Inspiration and the Housing Crisis

Housebuilding by Hand with Cinema 4D

When I first saw this very nicely done animation by “Beeble” I thought “what a great use of MoGraph - cloners, effectors, splines - incredible”. Then I looked through the comments and found the artist created the entire animation by hand. Even more incredible. It purports to be about the housing crisis, but it’s really just a cool animation of houses assembling and destructing. I love Cinema 4D even though I’m just a hacker at this point - so anyone who can really do something interesting with it inspires me to dig deeper.
