Scott Gentry

Scott Gentry started his career as a child actor then moving to ABC All My Children first in production straight out of college, then in front of the camera for a short stint as a regular walk-on (woo-hoo!).

Scott also worked the stadium camera for NY Jets and Giants games, as well a a multitude of events at the Meadowlands arena in NJ. From there he got into publishing and 6 months after sending his resume to DV magazine, he was the publisher. DV went from last to first place and Scott moved on to AV Video Multimedia Producer and led the team to turn that into Studio Monthly and launch Studio Daily.

Scott founded and helped establish PVC by gathering the best writers and video gurus in the market and putting them all in one place.

Anthro Elevate Wrap, Verte’ Chair, Zido Cart Review

The makings of the perfect office.

image

A few months ago the folks at Anthro Technology Furniture asked us to give an extended road test to three of their products—the Anthro Elevate Wrap table, Verté chair, and Zido adjustable cart. We put all three to work in real-world office and studio settings, and the overall experience has been a striking reminder that good equipment extends beyond lenses, cameras, and digital technology. Successful creative professionals use every tool that improves efficiency and productivity, including furniture. They make their work space work for them.

PVC 2.5 is Going to Rock!

A dot-rev where the back-end PVC gets an investment.

Every time there’s a major software update to one of my favorite programs, I look forward to the experience of opening the program for the first time.  Sometimes there’s a major overhaul and things change dramatically - think about the upcoming FCP.  Other times there’s “dot-upgrades” where nothing much has changed in the user interface, but the back end is far more stable, and it becomes an overall program with features that make it even more invaluable.

I am happy to say that PVC, along with our sister sites; ProPhoto, Pro3D, ProAudio, etc, are all experiencing a “dot-upgrade” with a recent investment by Createasphere.  You may know Createasphere, formerly HD Expo, for their education, Entertainment Technology Expos, Post Production Master Classes, and much more.  Createasphere will not only be investing in our properties, they will integrate into the day-to-day role behind the scenes.  What you may not have realized was how small PVC was behind the scenes, prior to this investment.  Sure we have a great arsenal of writers, and that will not change, but we had no accountant, no web developer, no full time sales force.  The back-end is getting stronger allowing PVC to grow to its potential.  The things you don’t see behind the scenes, will now allow our writers to deliver more great content.

Together, PVC and Createasphere are going to take these sites to a bigger and more stable place, both online and in-person.

I plan on being part of the transition to make sure things run smoothly, and potentially much longer.  I am really excited about this transition to PVC 2.5 and will finally be able to realize much of our plans moving forward.

Best,
Scott Gentry

PVC In a Print Magazine?

We’ve received a bunch of requests.  Are you interested?

Many of us on PVC have come from the print world.  While online presents many advantages to print, there’s nothing like a great magazine, wonderful design and beautiful images to inspire.

Many times I’ve been asked if PVC will do a print version.  In fact, there have been so many times, it now makes sense to find out what the market is for print?  We have a very brief survey, in fact only three questions long, to test the waters.  If you like PVC and would like to see more, perhaps in print, please take a few moments to fill out the survey.  If we move forward with a print version, and if there’s a subscription fee, the first 1,000 respondents to the survey will get a free subscription to PVC.

C’mon, three questions!  Here’s the survey

Thanks, this really helps us plan.
Scott

2D Footage with a Stereo 3D Rig in After Effects CS5.5

Edit and Optimize 2D Stereo Pairs from a 3D Video Camera or Twin Cameras with a Modified Stereo 3D Rig in After Effects CS5.5

Adobe included a 1-step option to create a 3D Stereo Camera Rig in After Effects CS5.5, to everyone’s enthusiasm for a simpler workflow in 3D space. Great if you are working in 3D space in After Effects, but what about an easy option for 3D Stereo pairs captured by a 3D camera or twin cameras on a rig? In this tutorial I’ll show you how to quickly modify the Stereo 3D Rig in After Effects to quickly mux your L&R video files and adjust the convergence for anaglyph, interlaced or stereo pairs output.

How to get the “24p” look for your live-switched multicam shoot

Allan Tépper | 02/10- 04:23 PM

A contracted article, sponsored by Datavideo Corporation.

Our friends at Datavideo recently asked me to write an article called How to get the “24p” look for your live-switched multicam shoot. The article covers many factors involved in accomplishing that goal, including framerate, aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, and menu settings in Datavideo’s digital HD video mixers (“switchers”) and recorders, and also the menu settings in several pro cameras from Canon, Panasonic, and Sony. The included chart explains which of the cameras have a direct HD-SDI output, and which require an optional converter to go from HDMI to HD-SDI to connect to the Datavideo digital HD video mixer. As you’ll see in the article, the approach is quite different from the workflows I normally cover, which are more appropriate when programs are to be edited, as opposed to when they are shot —and potentially broadcast— live. The graphics for this article were done by Victory Elliot of Datavideo Corporation.
